Default Seat upholstery rejuvenation?

Hi,
I have some pretty nice leather seats in my '84. The leather itself is pretty sound. There are no cracks or tears in the bolsters and the leather finish is OK. The problem is in the middle section of the seats and backs. Here several of the transverse tucks have come loose from their interior attachment points. This gives the rectangular foam sections a less than crisp appearance.
I have done some upholstery replacement on other cars. My question is have any of you pulled theses seats apart to fix whatever is loose. Are there listing wires in sleeve which I could sew back in place? It seems a shame to think of replacing otherwise nice seats when they might be repaired. I am hoping that Paul or Rob might be able to advise.

Thanks

Dave,

this is a common problem. It lies in how the pads for the inserts are held in place.
To put everything back together, you will need to separate the back from the seat. Remove the insert from the backrest. Remove the cover from the seat portion.

The covers for all inserts are held in place by 3 listings, each held in place by 3 hog rings. Once these are undone, you will be able to separate the leather covers with the insert pads, away from the backing foams.

At this point, give me a shout and I will take you the rest of the way.

The older style seats seem to do this more than the 85+ seats do?

I think "older" is the key word here Brian

I'm doing a complete replacement of my seat covers. Unfortunately the instructions listed above were pretty much what I got with mine. The part in bold is where I am right now, but I can't seem to figure out how to 'remove the cover from the seat portion'.

How is the cover connected to the seat portion? Does the sliding frame have to come off of the seat or does all of that stay together and the leather just comes off of it somehow?

Anyone?

Hey Mike,

I posted the above as an answer to a specific question, not as a step by step guideline.
Whoever sold you the covers should be able to help you with the details and some of the procedure.

In essence, the bottom leather cover and foam are held to the frame by hog rings. Usually 4 on each side, tying listings that run the length of the seat, + 3 sets of 3 hog rings, tying listings that run across the seat. These are right below the channels that separate the pads.
