AC fan not blowing on setting 1-3
My air conditioning fan does not blow on settings 1 through 3. Works fine on high (4). Doesn't matter if the ac button is on or off. Doesn't matter where I set the temperature slider, cold or hot. The rear ac works fine. Both blow cold. I can get by, but its a PITA to have to turn on and off because of the noise level with the fan on high.
This happened once before. But after a week or so it just started working normal again. I haven't changed or done anything of late to the car. I tried a search of past posts, but didn't find anything. Any ideas on what might be causing the problem?

hi wade,
this is most likely being caused by the resistor pack for the blower (same part that causes magic blower syndrome.) its located in the air intake for the climate control under the cowl on the divers side. you'll see a plug (multiprong) that attaches to it and 2 screws holding it in the intake. to remove it you need to loosen the rubber boot between the blower and the intake and get your (or someone elses) arm in there to hold it as you remove the screws. install is the reverse. its about a $45 part as i recall.

I would inspect the switch first. Remove the actuall switch on the dash, get some plastic safe electrical contact cleaner and spray it off. If it's a radiostat type resistor switch it might just not be making contact. Or might just need replacing.
I'm guessing here. I don't know what type of switch is used on the control unit, but this might be a simple, less expensive, solution.

My new resistor cost me $75. I bought it trying to solve my Phantom fan. I still have my old one that I could sell really cheap if you need it - but it has the phantom fan syndrome
I can post a picture of it so you can understand how yours works. It may be as simple as adjusting the springs.
The 1988 tech bulletin says that the wires/springs can not touch or your fan will not operate correctly.
It could also be the switch as previously posted.

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestions. Sorry it took a while to reply back.
I finally got around to rooting around under the center console. After fiddling with the wiring a bit under there, primarily on the driver's side, I tested the fan. Of course, it started working normal again and has been for the last week. Even made a run to Vegas with no problems with it. However, I'm sure the problem will surface again (probably smack dab in the middle of summer), so I'll keep the ideas in mind so I can properly fix the problem and let ya know if its the switch or resistor pack.
