Post Idiot non-PO...

Hi!

I haven't got a 928 yet but will get one before I'm 24 which will be in June. Hopefully I will have one at the end of this year, got one deal in progress...

It's a black 928 GT with burgundy interior - 10/10 exterior and 9/10 interior. Has been standing at a Porsche center for more than a year after a guy who bought it made a downpayment and hasn't picked up the car.

I spoke to the salesguy an hour ago and will get word from him today if they will let me buy the car, have been on him fo the last two months about buying the car.

This is exciting!

I had a salesmen try selling the car I have after giving him a down payment to hold the car. I had searched the web for three months prior to picking the one I got, called the salesmen up and got the vin # and a carfax. With that info I offered him $12900 for a car he wanted 14,900. He agreed and I placed a down payment of $1000 for him to hold the car for me at said price. This was in late March of 1999. I told him that I would be there on June 10 to pick it up. (My birthday present) When I finally show up on the 10th what should I see but my car sitting on the lot for sale at $11,900. So I played dumb and walked the lot looking at vettes and jags till I come to the 928, with two sales people in tow. I inquired about the car, asked to drive it, got it on the car lift to look it over, and offered $10,900. They readily accepted and started the paper work. When it came time to pay I handed over $9900 in cash and they started counting. Hey your a thousand short, they said. I replied by handing over the receipt for my $1000 deposit. That was almost priceless seeing their jaws drop, when they realized who I was and that they just lost $2000 because they tried to screw me for my deposit. True story, just swing by Duncan motors in Eugene, OR and ask 'em about it.

Thanks!

Rather pleased with the outcome.
But when I first pulled up my first reaction was to start chewing some a$$. Glad I didn't.

Brilliant !!!

My old man (God bless him) had this to say about used car sales people: "They're all ********. They'll take you for every buck you have if you let them... If you let them do that to you then YOU're the *******..."

Shane,
You need to get that one printed in the paper, never seems anyone gets an upper hand on the salesman

Shane: Edmunds.com had a thread written by a journalist who joined the ranks of salesmen several weeks and exposed the good and bad. You might be able to send it there. It only scratches the surface but all sales has a sad undercurrent of contempt for the mark and it becomes a game rather than a person to person encounter. Some are decent but many are desperate and pathetic, and do not deserve compassion. Such is life. You won the game. Sweet.

Shane,
Great deal!
I like the guy with the shiny polyester pants and a shirt that was either a Dollar sale item at K'Mart or salvaged from the Salvation Army cast-off bin.
When he leaves you in his office to talk to the "BOSS' about knocking a few bucks off the deal for you. You notice a few things...
Pictures of the family outside their $275,000 home over in Saddle Club fronting the long view off of the 9 hole ...by the Lake. There are Merc's and Bimmers in the drive.
Framed on the office walls are testimonials to taking the lions share of salesman of the month, quarter for the last 9 years and salesman of the year 6 out of those 9 years.
Borrow a baby or two if you don't have any and sit in his office after 6:00pm three times a week until you break him. ( I have no shame
and I'm proud of it! )
Keep up the good work, shows that consumers are still flexible. Now if I can only get a job teaching college level Consumer Haggling courses.
John S & Pattycakes.
P.S. Sweanders,
nice looking ride. Good luck on the purchase.
Over here many dealers are forced by law - not always - to sell a layaway car minus the original down payment. A 'mechanics lein' is governed by similar laws.

John,
John you summed this guy up exactly! Poly pants, pictures of house and cars, complete with awards for thieving the most customers, etc. Although I'm sure he still made money off the car since carfax listed the last prior purchase as a Gov. related auction.

First, you are talking to a salesman there. Who knows what the truth is.
Second, the 928 has been sitting for a year. This is not good for any sportscar, especially 928.
Have a 928 owner stop by and have a look if you have never had one of these yourself. Then, get a PPI and run the carfax.

Shane,

That has got to go down as the all-time classic piece of s**t used car salesman story. Be hard press for anyone to beat that one.

Congrats!

Shane:

I love your story. It shows that you can win more by being clever than by trying to bully them the same way they try to bully you.

I only bought one car at a US dealer - a Nissan dealer in San Jose. It was a used '89 Ford Probe LX (fully loaded). The salespeople had no clue about the car (or cars in general), and were BSing and bragging to no avail.

They played the "have to ask the sales manager" game until I walked out. I wish I would have done that earlier, because then they finally tried to find a compromise that I could live with. They were very surprised when I came back three days later, to claim the extra gas they had promised.

I neither the sales manager's "last penny" which he pulled out of his pocket at some point during negotiations, nor did I accept the apple he found in the drawer of the desk we were sitting at...

Since then, I have bought cars only from private parties, or from a Public Auto Auction

Yep, agreed. A friend of mine has been working with 928's since the beginning of the 80's so thats cool - he'll take a look at it. A PPI would be pretty worthless since the car is sold at a Porsche-center.

PPI's are always a worth it. Car's are sold by people, lots or dealer to make money on them. Just because they are a Porsche dealer does not mean you should not get a PPI from a reputable mechanic. I would still have the PPI done, or have your friend take a look at it (if you have faith in his mechanical diagnosis ability on the Shark's).

Hope the shark is all and more what than what you expect. Good luck.

I thought you meant that PPI was something offered by Porsche-centers. We will be making our own PPI.

My friend and I will check just about everything on it. He is considered a Porsche specialist by a lot of people and works for one of the best known shops in southern Sweden, and then he has his own shop at home where he does work for those customers that he think are nice people.

We have a good business agreement - I let him beat me in table-tennis and he takes care of my Porsche.
