Yeah Lamborghini made an SUV before they were actually called SUV's. The story on the LM0012 goes that it was designed to be a military vehicle and when the Saudi's (and other middle eastern regimes) didn't bite or buy enough of them, they turned it into a civilian vehicle. Point is, they don't make it now. I've always wondered what kind of soldier was going to fix a Lamborghini V12 in the middle of the desert. You'd be hard pressed to find a shop in the States that can service you Lamborghini Countach properly.

However, it was fast, but it was ultimately a piece of junk and rode worse than Jeeps of the same years. It Reeked of fuel fumes from randomly to all the time....when it was running. A whole lot of leather can't cover up everything.

Lastly, neither Ferrari or Lamborghini has an SUV on the market right now. One or two wagons in a specific garage do not count, besides that, I don't think you'd hear as much howling if Porsche were coming out with a superwagon. Nah, nevermind, you would. Porsche is going down this road only because they've watched Mercedes Benz and BMW have success with their SUV's.

Over the last few months I've been paying particular attention to all the various SUV's out there and their drivers. I can't count the number of times I've seen their drivers (especially small females) absolutely struggle with their X5's, Expeditions and Excursions. The frustration on their faces in any given parking lot or parking situation is unbelievable (not to mention all the near misses on the freeway). The vehicles are relatively new, still years from lease end but you can tell they're not going to make that mistake again. Matter of fact, one of those hapless drivers in my building traded her Tahoe for a regular sized Toyota.

Anyway, Porsche undoubtedly knew what a gamble this would be, and now with all the things going on in the world and the economy, it knows it made a mistake. What to do though? They're already committed, so they've got to build em and ship em and watch a few poeple indeed buy them, and the rest of them will sit.

My point is that these cars did not hurt their image at all. It's no big deal if Porsche makes an SUV, as long as it's the fastest on earth!

The Boxster is a Roadster. I have nothing against them, but I would like an entry level sports car, that is a coupe, that is reasonably fast. Say, the Boxster S, in coupe form for, lets say $30-35,000.

I would buy it, provided I had the money. Didn't Porsche already design (at least inpart) a superwagon? I think they called it the Audi RS2.

Tabor, so glad someone else remembered the Audi. Did that one ever make it (officially) stateside?

I agree with Kaz, the Lambo was kind of a joke, right up there with the LaForza. I have never had the (dis?)pleasure of a ride/drive in an LM002, but I have suffered more than once through a jaunt in a Hummer. I have also spent a coupla days in the desert in the MB G-Wagen- a vehicle that can make loaded Range Rovers seem incapable and quite uncivilized. Really.

I hate to point this out but we are sounding an awful lot like 911 owners around the time that the 924/944 was the quasi-new kid on the block. It was a volume car. It probably saved the company. The usual conglomerations of "purists" hated it. But it worked, it sold, and kept enough of what makes the world go 'round in the bank to keep the company extant.

Personally, I have an SUV. It's called a 928. It handles, brakes, accelerates, and stops very well. It achieves about 20 MPG. It has a hatchback. It also has split folding rear seats. And a top speed north of 155MPH.

How much more utilitarian can you get?

Red face

If Lamborghini makes SUVs...
Not an fair or accurate comparision. Lambo orginally made those SUV's for the Saudi Army and had pre-orders for them. The Saudi Army then declined to take delivery so they were sold to everyday consumers around the world to ditch the inventory. It was never launched to aim at consumers with demand for them. Sorry

I agree, the Porsche SUV does not look bad at all. I'm just admittedly anti SUV (of any make or model) unless you live 100 miles off road in Montana or at least it has the chance to get off the 405.

I've ridden in a few LM002's and the Hummer has a vastly improved ride, but just cannot match the acceleration of the Lamborghini. Comfort in the seat of any given Hummer is an entirely different matter from ride quality. Never been in the MB Gelandewagon but do not doubt it's competence at all.

In any case, I forgot all about the Audi RS2, but I did own Porsche's 4 door sedan, the 500E.

Well, now I guess we'll just wait for the first idiots to flip these things.

Greg, the RS2 never made it state side. The RS4 is out in Europe now.

Thumbs down

Sorry guys.

Since I'm the one who started this threat, I'm the one who's gonna end it. I wanted to hear what you guys had to say about Porsche's future racing plans.

Sadly this topic deteriorated into discussing SUV's (I own 3 of 'em by the way) whilst all other manufacturers out there are kicking Porsche butt all over the globe...

Please don't post SUV sh@t here anymore.

Hmm, I think I see where it degenerated into Anti SUV talk. Essentially Porsche is spending it's cash on SUV development instead of any top notch racing series out there.

Until it straightens out it's priorities it's butt is going to continue to get kicked.

P.S. Any chance this SUV will end up in the Paris/Dakar rally?

I wonder, if we're going to see a Cayenne engine in DEVEK's white car anytime soon...

Just for info. The RS4 production has been terminated. 6030 built. Official reason, "to keep the model rare". Real reason, too many problems with it, starting with the 18 inch wheels collapsing under stress,

PS: The latest report from Porsche in the press is that the 6 cylinder Boxer engine will remain in the rear end of the 911 until end of model year 2007 at least and at which time the decision will be reviewed. Just co-incidently the current CEO has had his contracted extended until 2007.

Adrian,

I disagree since Audi was originally only going to build 500 a year, and were badgered into building more.

I just learned that Porsche has a GT1 looking car called the 997 in its design tunnels in Germany.

Wonder what that is all about?
