I just finished replacing the (passenger) upper A-arm bushings on my '80, all without removing any engine accessories (like A/C compresssor). I had to fab a tool for the forward mounting bolt, as I could not get a ratchet & socket in there due to lack of clearance. No hoist, 1 jack, 1 jack stand & basic hand tools. Ball joints were popped without tool, just heat & prybar and a lot of

nah not yet
do a couple brake jobs, replace the dampers and springs, do a TB/WP job, reseal a transaxle, rebuilt a torque tube, fix an AC problem or two, fix a few electrical shorts.....then you get a gold wrench..
Keep it up, its good you can do these things, otherwise without the DIY owners, i think there would be allot fewer 928's left then there currently are.

Well done. I have the engine out at the moment. Perhaps the right time (according to some) to do the upper A arm bushings? But how can I tell this is needed. At the last MOT (APK in Netherlands) my car ('78 928) was not commented on that part. A 2002 Renault Megane AND a 1999 Fiat Punto failed the same day same garage on faulty suspension bushings. The mechanic tested the A-arm bushing with a large pry-bar but could not find too much play in them. Should I replace the bushings just because of age (29 y)?

Serious question! How can you tell the upper A-arm bushings need replacement? Just because of old age and the assumption that new ones are better or becaude there is noticeble play in the upper A-arm. And which bushings to use? Urethane?
