"Then why do you have a horse on your car ?..."
Was rolling up to stop at a red light today, when a bunch of schoolkids emerged from an adjacent park.
2-3 boys, aged 10 or thereabouts did a complete doubletake when they spotted the 928. Gesticulating for me to roll down the window, I got the question "Is it a Ferrari ??", when I did so.
"No, it's a Porsche..."
"A Porsche ? - Then why do you have a horse on it ??" (Pretty good observation, to spot the horse in either the hood or wheel logos)
Unfortunately, the lights had turned green, and with cars behind me, I had to move off before I could explain to them that Porsche also uses a horse in their logo - in fact based on the exact same stallion Ferrari uses I believe.
Still, quite amusing to see their initial reaction
Cheers,
Erling

Different horse actually. I'm sure that someone will post a more definitive explanation later, but briefly: Porsche's horse is from the banner of Stuttgart (stud-farm, loosely translated, if I'm not mistaken). Ferrari's horse is from the banner/mascot of an Italian air force flier who died and who Enzo wanted to honor.

Read about this connection recently in a classic car magazine. Can't remember the details offhand, but will see if I can find it again and post more.

Here's an article about the history of the Ferrari "Cavallino Rampante". It does support your statement about the "shot down German pilots emblem" as a theory of the Ferrari emblem's origin.

Sorry guys. Don't know why the link doesn't work (at least w/ my browser). If you copy it and paste it to your browser it will work. This is the 1st time I've attached a link and maybe I've made a mistake in the process.

The Ford Mustang was designed around the lines and named after the P 51 Mustang from WW2, the horse emblem on the Ford product is a Mustang at gallop, The British wanted another manufacturer to produce the P 40 Warhawk so they went to North American Aviation, to make an order NAA said they could design and mfg a better plane in the same time it would take to tool up for the P 40, So the British ordered the P51. The P 51 Mustang was first used as a dive bomber/ recon plane. The dive bomber was called the A 36 Apache and was fitted with the Allison V 12 naturally asperated. The Mustang was named by the British, and it got its poke from the the British installing a Rolls Royce Merlin engine it has 1650ci and made 1675 hp it is a V 12 with 4 valves per cylinder and has a twin staged turbo supercharger. The Merlin engine was installed due to the poor performance at altitude given by the Allison, this let the Mustang be faster than the ME109 and the FW190... the most prolific model is the most famous it is the P51 D with the bubble canopy.....A Gathering of Mustangs is scheduled for Sept 27 in Ohio its called the last roundup they are expecting over 100 flyable Mustangs to the be present......
