No, it's not a sin - but you would remove a very rare type of interior material. In fact, it is so rare, partially because the fabric is no longer available (to the best of my knowledge).
What color is yours?
I personally don't think the checkerboard is that bad - it was actually considered quite trendy in Germany in the late 70ies. So, in a way it's a part of the 928s history.
The leather is more timeless, and neutral. Maybe it would be most economical for you to buy a set of used leather seats and door inserts, and either sell the rest, or preserve it for the far future, when noone else can show how that stuff looked like...

Aw Dave, I've only seen one other car with the checkerboard seats and I got to drive it from the tire shop back over to German Auto Art. These seats were brown checker too and they were just key man! It's just kind of Austin Powers, you gotta keep the seats. If you really, really want leather, get some aftermarket seats or something but don't recover what you've got. They're just too rare.

Some people don't seem to like the checkerboard seats, but i do. The seats weren't in very good condition in the vast majority of the cars that I've seen with them. The material isn't available anymore, so once they're gone that's it. If it were me, I'd put covers over the seats to help protect them if you're using the car fgor a lot of daily driving.
I noticed that you're in Buffalo Grove. Are you aware of the local 928 group? There are a group of us from the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin arear that get together once in a while.

Dave,
(and others of the op-art persuasion)
If you want/need OEM interior stuff, you might try Southbound (in the UK). They handle Pasha, logo cloth, etc...
I have not personally done biz with them, but have heard a couple of favorable reports from people I tend to trust.
