Post Pics of 928 Convertible

Some of you have been asking for pics of my new aquisition - a '79 928 convertible. Here are three of them.

Interesting story, this one. I autocross a 78 928 and I was looking for an extra motor to rebuild off-season, or better yet, a parts car. A fella in a 911 came up to me at an autocross and asked me if I needed a parts car. "Do I!" I replied. He said he'd been tearing up the County hwys and actually flipped the car end-over-end. Put him in the hospital for 3 months. He'd repaired it, tried to make a convertible out of it cuz the roof was smashed anyway, but since he bought the 911, lost his passion for the project and his wife was making him "choose" between his 911 and his 928. I took a flatbed to the barn it was in and bought it on the spot. This guy new quite a bit more than your average hobbyist about fiberglass, and he had made his own vacuum-formed molds and hand laid up the glass using Kevlar mesh. It's beautiful! He did a VERY nice job that I cannot take credit for. His strength is not the mechanicals (mine is) so I have to finish it and the car still needs some basic repair. I took it to a frame straightening shop and had it checked and it is within 1/4" of being perfectly squaare and true - easily dialed in with ordinary alignment adjustments. I will write more as I work on it. It has been "on hold" in my garage all winter as I put the finishing touches on my supercharger for the 78 Euro, but I'll get to it this spring. Now I REALLY need a parts car!

Carl,

That's just too cool! How is the handling compared to your coupe? Pretty stiff still or pretty flexy with the top chopped?

Handling? I cannot really tell yet or compare it to my 78 Coupe for these reasons: my Coupe has Weltmeister springs, Konis all dialed up to the max, bigger swaybars, 17" wheels, etc so she'spretty stiff. In comparison the Convertible is all stock and rides like I remember it. The fella did strengthen the frame beneath the car with additional Kevlar crossmembers, and when I jack up one corner, the whole side guys up just like ya want so I do not thinkthere is an unusal amount of twist available. But, I haven't driven it much yet.

I have a spare set of Yokohama's I'm going to put on it,and the Borla exhaust from my Coupe is going on it, and it needs a tune-up BAD.

Items to finish: it has no radio, no convertible top - I am going to maker a tonneau cover for it and call it a day, and maybe add a roll bar. The fron end needs the typical tie rods ends, joints as do most at this age to tighten the tracking up a bit.

You know, it actually looks kinda like the upcoming Carrera GT in general shape. I think that's saying a lot for both the original design and your PO's design expertise, he obviously went through a lot of trouble to make it look good.

Hey, what caught my eye was that it's a Euro! You didn't mention that, so I assume you DO know this.

I also like the front bumper cover, kind of a "kitbash" between the older and newer style covers. Is it made of fiber glass? I would like to have a nose cone like that on my 82.

Please fill me in on the details of that....thanks
