The 928 S4 has enough lights that can be seen from the side - why does it need the side marker lights?
What would be the implication of removing them and welding the holes when the car is repainted some day?
Police trouble? Insurance balking in case of an accident? We don't have vehicle inspection in CA, what would happen in States that have it? What about the bulb monitoring system?

the side marker lights were only fitted to US export cars (same goes with those strange square black bumpers in the rear licence plate recess!). Cars for the rest of the world don't have them. I presume there must be some regulation requiring them. Bear in mind that the front fenders are aluminum so welding is going to be difficult.

Nicole, I agree with you I dont like the side marker at all either. I like the nice clean look.
I know you keep asking to get a clear one and actually I think I would like a red one like the rear.
Look at my picture, the red hardly shows up but the yellow - I probably could have lived with it if you hadn't said anything, hehe.

Nicole,
For some reason... angle of flick, or, paint color your 91' front side marker seems a lot longer than Jerry's 87' but if I'm not mistaken they are identical part numbers.
Jerry, That red dressed harlot of your's look's just fine as she sits.
Jerry and Nicole, if you look at the blue Euro in Dave's post -above- .
Block out the after well marker with a piece of paper and just look at as much of the fender as you can manage. IMO the markers don't look bad at all. In fact they KINDA' enhance the looks of the nose - kinda' plain out there all by itself... And Jerry ... I think there is a lens color code in most states maybe to differentiate front from rear of the car to others. Aircraft use red and green to differenciate left from right - kind of important for them to know wether they are overtaking another acft., or converging, I believe the same applies to watercraft.
In any case don't go experimental with the lights or some bookworm patrol officer will clip your'wings' I believe that the mount lips actually add to the structural strength of that nose area -could be wrong.
Later, Keep em' rolling

Nicole,
I have a 1980 Euro that just went in for a complete paint job. As part of the federalization process, very tacky add-on marker lights were put on in the place where the American-version cars had theirs. I had my body shop remove these and weld the holes shut. No problem welding on the aluminum - you just have to find someone proficient with a "heliarc" (sp?) welder. So, when my car is done, it should have only the euro side-markers behind the wheel well (just like DaveW's car). I don't anticipate any problems... I'm sure I will be posting some pics here when the whole process is finished. From what the paint shop says so far, everything is turning out great. I'm sure I'll be posting a few pics here of the finished product in time.

John: I llike plain. The simpler, the better. And I would never ever have to remove the fender liners again to get to the bulbs...
Brian: Please let me know how your next vehicle inspection goes - don't you guys have that on the East Coast?
Well, it is probably another couple of years until my 'baby' goes in for a makeover, but removing the side mouldings and side markers would be on my list of desired improvements. The side markers only, if I don't run the risk of having to put them back in at a later time...
