Chris,
You should consider coming out to the Boston Shark Party to see the differences between the cars and what to expect regarding condition and maintenance. Many experts will be on hand to answer questions.

A properly sorted 86 928 with a supercharger kit and intercooler will put out 500 hp easy. A sorted one with extras could put out 650hp, and that is as far as I would go due to the drivetrain only being rated for it. Andy Keel used to put mickey thompson tires on his and ran around 12.3 in the quarter mile, it appeared he was putting out around 500hp. Totally stock engine except for the blower.

Another thing is that 928's of that year generally have 2:20 ring and pinions, but you can get larger gears. Andy who ran the 12.3--- 1/4 mile had a stock ring and pinion. 928's are setup to do close to 200 mph with that ring and pinion gear.
Tim Murphy has a supercharged 87 and makes the SC's for 928's, which he sells to the public, and its a great kit. I think he ran 11.3?? in the quarter mile. He runs higher than 9 psi to acheive that 1/4 mile run. Not much hp difference from the 86 stock to the 87.
The 86 928 is a good year, they handle alot better than 95% of the US sports cars out there. They are also built alot tougher and engineered better.

An '86 Auto should be around a mid 14 second car stock, was rated at 310 crankshaft hp, and weighs about 3500 lbs.
The early 32v cars supposedly respond very well to Autothority chips, and for an '86 you can do an X-Pipe (all '86 right, not just 86.5?) and RMB, you could even do headers...

With the early 86, a Y-pipe into a large single is easier to fit, but can be retrofitted to duals with some effort. The stock stainless steel tubular manifolds flow almost as well as headers.
