The way the PO had the front suspension set up was to put those screw in spring supports. But even though, in reverse and with the front wheels turned all the way one way, the fender could touch a tiny bit. That was the phone dial wheels on a '79.
I just finished the spring/shock upgrade, and it appears I get the same fender-type measurement as Kaamacat. For whatever that's worth. Hey, here's a pic of the new shoes-
