Exclamation Need help installing Antenna motor replacement

Trouble in Shark-Diego,CA

I just bought the replacement part for my '80 928's power antenna. The wires on the new unit are black, white and red. My old unit has a brown, yellow/blue, and green if I remember correctly. Does anyone know which wires go to which color on the new unit so I don't splice to the wrong wires and really screw things up? The instructions from the seller said the wire colors would be the same on the car as the unit...not so. I haven't looked at the wires that are still connected to the car since they go into an insulated male plug in.

Also, the mounting nut is smaller than the original one which held the outter black piece on the fender in place and held the antenna mast in place. The seller's instructions said to use this old piece but I don't see how that will work. I'm waiting to hear back from the guy who sells the part on Ebay but thought some of you might have already gone through this job. I may just have to put everything back together in the meantime....CD's only I guess for a while.....

According to the WSM wiring diagram, the car's configuration is as follows:

Brown - Earth ground
Red - +12V (hot)
White - switched +12V (radio antenna lead)

If the car's configuration is as above, the connections should go:
Brown - Black
Red - Red
White - White

I'm not sure where the yellow/blue and green come from. You might want to get a volt meter and see which one of those is hot and which is switched.

To be clear, the antenna (I have the same unit) is wired as:
Black - Earth ground
Red - Hot +12V
White - Switched power from antenna

HTH,
Scott

Just looked at mine. I have the Hirchman (spelling?) and its wired like this.
Red on antenna to Blue at car.
White on antenna to Green/yellow at car.
Brown (ground) at car was not used because my antenna did not come with a black ground wire. (which I thought was odd.)
Also, nothing off that original antenna set up will help you mount the new one. Use all the mounting gear from your new antenna as its a completely different set up. At least mine was.
Good luck.
BTW Scott, did you move yet? We need to have another DFW 928 happy hour!!

Great info, will go ahead and finish the job today. Been missing the "smooth jazz" station lately.....man I must be gettin' old....still like my Nirvanna CDs and playing ice hockey, but oddly, driving slow and having an automatic tranny doesn't seem as bad as it used to.....
Will post once the job is complete.
ps the guy who sells the replacements has been very helpful and responsive on emails, but obviously he hasn't dealt with as old a 928 as mine until now given his surprise at the different wiring configuration mine has.

All set! Gary at GLG direct was helpful but the specific wiring info really helped from above. Gary now has the correct wiring info for those who run into the mismatch of colors in the future. My next trick is figuring how to put a picture of my ride next to all my posts. On a sidebar, looks like the old unit will go to a happy home as well. Thank you again everyone. On to the next repair...
