Default Slight Timing Fluctuation

I put the timing light to my engine last night and it was right on 10 degrees at idle, but also jumped to 8 degrees a couple times. There didn't seem to be a cycle to the 10-8 change and the 8 only lasted for one revolution before going back to ten.

It acts like a miss. I have new coils, fuel injectors and new plugs and wires. I put the light to all my plug wires and they are all firing. I changed the plugs when I first noticed this flutter, so it happened with old and new ones. Rebuilt MAF, all new sensors except TPS, vacuum is good.

Anything else I should look for? Should I even worry about it? It doesn't feel like it affects the performance at all.

Matt,

I think there's something that changes the timing by 3 deg. (temp II?) I can't imagine it's changing it in between revolutions though. Does it do the same thing warm and cold?

I think it is ignition related. The only things that aren't new are the EZ-K and Ignition control modules. I should have checked timing again when I got back from my drive last night but didn't. I don't think the problem was still there, though.

I have had electronic timing lights that would do this exact issue you describe. My first step would be to try another timing light and make sure you seperate the wires as much as possible to help with pickup interference.

Issue resolved. I tightened all the rubber boots and it doesn't stutter anymore. It also doesn't drop to near zero RPM when coming off high revs.

Matt,

That's great. I noticed that for mine, it works better if I wait until it's warmed up completely, then tighten all the intake boots. If I do it cold, they work themselves loose over time and eventually it affects the idle.

Now that I've done it warm they seem to keep their position better.

I don't know if that's in the manual, I just tried it this time and it works.
