Rot Roh....Need a little help here
I am doing the timing belt replacement and have run into a little problem. MY 83 DOES NOT have a 45 BTDC mark to use, valve/piston contact not a problem (I think). So I have to use TDC. Initially the mark on the right (passenger) side cam gear lined up perfectly with the housing, but the left was off about 5 teeth (didn't count them). I marked the cam sprocket on the left side before removing the belt so I could put it back to the way it was. During my vigilent cleaning I seem to have removed my mark on the left side. Valve spring compression has moved the cams and now I haven't a clue what to do to ensure proper timing.
God I hope this makes sense, I need some help. Maybe there is an obvious solution that I am missing here. Should I just align the marks on the sprockets to the references on the housing and be done with it?

Mitch,
According to the Shop Manual, T-Belt replacement on 16v engines is done at TDC. Here is a screen capture from the manual http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/928-16vTBelt.jpg
Hope it helps.

Let me try this again.
Mitch, there _are marks on the cam gears. They're on the back of the gear, facing the engine, little _V_ notches. When you find them, mark the front with nail polish.
Get a piece of paper and mark off 10 degrees on the balancer using the existing lines. Then extend the marks past 30 with the paper, mark with polish. Park the engine at 45 on the balancer and everything will sit still.
Once you get the new belt on, rotate it several times to make sure the marks line up at TDC all the time.
Good luck and have fun.

Thanks DG
Mike,
Found the "real" mark on the right, there is another spot that looked notched but wasn't (upon closer inspection). Thanks for the tip, I imagine at 45 the spring compression is less?
Looks like I am about done, Broke one water pump bolt reassembling of all things....hope to have bwaaaaaah tomorrow.
