Post missing cruise

I arrived back from a lengthy overseas trip ready to do battle with my 'never-worked-since-I've-had-it' cruise control and armed, thanks to Rennlist, with a diagnostic procedure from Wally Plumley and a circuit diagram from Jim Morehouse. On setting up to work under the dash what do I find? NO CONTROL BOX in the space I expected to find it. ie attached by a single bolt to the brake pedal bracket. Not only that but also no bolt, bolt hole, cable, connector, nothing. No sign of it ever having been there. I scratched around both sides of the dash for hours with nothing to show for it but a stiff neck. The fuse #4 is in place as is the all-electric actuator unit behind the left front wheel. Can anyone tell me where else could the 'brain' be and how do I get to it?

TIA
Colin

hmmm..try the center console...laying flat on the driveshaft tunnel..a silver box..just fwd of the radio (looking fwd). Cross check with a part number to be sure! If you remove both side panels you should see it i think

Below is a picture of mine when I removed it - just in case you havent seen one.

I removed the panel along the right side ( passenger side ) of the center console. Mine was directly in the middle of the console in the fartherest point back. You can see it plugged in and has two bolts that hold it in place.

It was hard to find the first time, but easy to replace after I found it.

My cruise control brain was where it was advertised...

To get at it, remove the passenger side package tray. Then remove the two screws that hold the carpet-covered wooden console side cover from that side. Way in back, on top of the exposed driveshaft tunnel is your computer.

Good luck getting it in and out! You have to really work on it, because it is literally jammed in there, with the connector against the firewall.

They talk about re-soldering all the connections inside of it once you bend the little tabs on the metal cover and pull it open. Only...there are about 1000 in there! I carefully cleaned the pins on the connector and it made a huge difference, though it still tends to surge a bit when at higher speeds [70+]. It seems this thing is very sensitive...

While this doesn't apply to later-model cars such as Colin's, with the all-electric cruise control,by far the most common problem with the earlier car's cruise cntro is the vacuum supply.

If your earlier cruise control doesn't work, look next to the brake booster and find the little vacuum line coming off of the large vacuum line on the booster. Follow it down past the check valve (little black/blue drum) to the four-way connector. The line that runs to the left front fender feeds the cruise control and vacuum reservoir. Temporarily hook the line that runs to the fender directly to the little check valve outlet, and try the cruise control. If it now works, you have vacuum leaks in the HVAC system under the dash.

Eureka!
I don't actually have it yet but I see it. I removed the kneetray and consol side panel from the passenger side (the left side in my case)and could see it above the shaft tunnel just where you guys said I would. It's inacessible from the left side but I'll open up the right tomorrow. Thanks to all for the help.

Here's one for the record books...

'85 shark #1526 did something interesting tonight. I had the cruise control set for 60 mph for the final segment of Semoran Blvd....an easy 2200 rpm, no traffic, Linkin Park through the speakers, and cool night airs from the open sunroof made for a nice scene.

Nearing Hoffner Blvd, I pushed in the clutch so I could coast for the last 1/4 mile or so. After a couple seconds delay...the tach revved and the Borla screamed V8 power-

Hello! This got 100% of my attention-

I stabbed the brake, instinctively I guess, and immediately it stopped. I stopped the car at the stop light, and when I turned, I worked my way to 3rd gear and at 45 mph, set the cruise. I then pushed in the clutch...and pushed down on the cruise paddle to resume. Sure enough....the engine revved again!

Gawd!

Well, I'm not going to use the CC until I do some maintenance on the clutch switch...or do something! Funny thing...when I push in the clutch normally, it doesn't do this! I've just recently managed to get the CC working so that it only surges +/- 3 mph...even after plumbing the CC tubes to another vacuum source.

-The airplanes I fly are typically older than me- Boeing 727's from the mid to late 1960's, and they will typically do something strange like this.

De-power the plane and then repower it, or clean the cannon plug and it works again...mysteriosly.

And I suspect that this thing will be the same. But has anyone else had this happen?

I replaced my cruise control box when it did almost the same thing. I would set it and it immediately would floor the gas pedal.

One time I let it go and it was full throttle up to 100 before I turned it off. Replaced the control box and no problems. I had previously fixed all the vacuum leaks also so this was my last resort.

I dont have a clutch though

Hey Normy whats a cannon plug? I looked for one on my 172 and couldn't find it, I even looked behind the TCAS display to no avail.

Eric-

A cannon plug is a device that provides job security for aircraft mechanics. It seems that many companies are willing to pay people $50,000 per year to spend their time cleaning these.

At least that's how it seems to work at my company. Funny thing- it sometimes even works.

I've only spent about 250 hours in C-172's, but I cannot remember seeing any cannon plugs anywhere. The 172 is probably too technically advanced; cannon plugs are generally only found on "Jurrasic Jet" and other denizens of the 1960's...
