Hello again,
Marc,
1 - to "see the light" please turn on your switch!!! Usually, this means flicking the switch down.
2 - If this does NOT WORK consult previous posts on this subject in here, from amongst others;
Wally Plumley
Jim Bailly
and with humility - me!
All the answers you need are therein!
As to your points 1,2, - well please read 2) above.
As for your point 3, anyone that does idle an engine 24hrs daily for 200 hrs and then covers 50 miles should make sure that the 50 miles covered includes a trip to the workshop to change the oil !!!
I do NOT profess to know more about the engines than the engineers that designed them. By the in-use monitoring of some of them I do know a lot about their needs. Using/sharing this knowledge with the oil and engine engineers builds a better "light switch?"

As for doing oil analysis on a 928 - great idea it would debunk a few theories!

As for abusing engines - I have never said or inferred to "abuse the hell out of an engine" and "not be aware of that abuse" that is the last thing a guy like me would do. But then read the posts or "flick your switch"

For Drew,

Yes Drew, by and large the bigger the total oil capacity in the lubrication system ( crankcase/filters etc. ) the longer the drain period ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL!
But it all depends on the Driver's Manual recommendations and the operational use of the vehicle as covered in there too
One dilemma faced by engine/oil Engineers today is how do you match emission demands, higher engine operating and under hood temperatures ,energy conservation and other engineering requirements with a smaller oil capacity. Trucks will soon ( within 18 mths ) be offered with a "no oil change" capacity ( and a large oil system volumn - possibly 50+ litres ( today about 38 litres )just an oil condition monitoring unit and a cleanable centrifuge/ss screen filtration unit. Oil additives/packages will be maintained by planned oil consumption ( programmed top up )

I hope this helps Drew

Regards

Hi Randall,
I do "bump the limiter" once in a while too - great fun. The damn polce here with speed cameras, radar are a problem - radar detectors are illegal too and carry a fine in some States of about $900

My 500 horsepower Detroit Diesels are all Premium Duty 12.7 litre DDEC 4 cycle units ( large high speed diesels ).The most common capacity in this country - and the biggest selling heavy truck engine in the USA too I think. We have a 100km/h speed limit for trucks and they do about 240000 kms per annum. Our gross train weights are 42000 kgs ( 100000 USlbs )
Average oil consumption in these engines is 6000km/ltr - they use more near the end of the oil change cycle and virtually none for the first 30000 kms. So oil consumption is really very low

As for car engines I like you too aren't brand blind - I just buy what I think is best. There are virtually no "bad" synthetic oils today - and no "wonder" oils either. But you get what you pay for

Thanks Randall
