I dunno about placement next to the brake handle (except ease of running the wires) For me, it would feel more natural someplace around the shifter, that is, for those of us who tend to rest their hand there anyway. But that's just me speaking.

i use mine to downshift from 2nd to 1st anytime im going that slow, say rolling up to a give way sign where you dont need to stop but the car wont pull well in 2nd. otherwise i use the shifter to drop from 4th to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd or hold it in 1st from a start.
