No, not the Rocky Horror type. This saga has already been enough of a horror story.
As summer wanes, I've yet to drive my car this year. My mechanic finally has everything back together (for the 2nd time - really long story). It runs well & sounds great w/ rebuilt heads, X-pipe & RMB. He takes it for a shakedown test drive, but at the end of the drive was confronted with the oft-experienced rattle from the torque tube . In discussing this with him he also mentioned that the transmission slipped at least once during the drive as well. I wasn't overly concerned with this, as the transmission has always seemed a little off in the 2 years that I've had the car. I was more concerned with the rattle, but was somewhat reassured when the items he wanted to check (pinch bolts, etc.) were the very same that I'd read about on Rennlist while researching this.
This morning, he took it for another run to check for the rattle and completely lost drive. He got the car back to the shop and is presently investigating exactly how far gone the tranny is, but it doesn't look good.
So now, in preparation of the likely outcome, I'm trying to source a rebuilt 4spd auto w/LSD for a 90 S4. I've already talked to Jim at 928 Intl, but they currently only have 89 & older. So, in case a full rebuild is the best route to go, does anyone know where I might find one?
I know everyone says never add up the bills, but I just can't help doing it in my head using multiples of $1,000.

Like Perry says, Steve Cattaneo is THE MAN when it comes to 928 transmissions. It wouldn't surprise me if he had one in his shop ready to go. PM me for his phone nember.

Laird, is it transmission or central shaft? Wasn't the rear flex plate rivetted on some 928 models, and the rattling sound a classic symptom of 'things' external to gerabox coming loose ending up with loss of drive?

From my understanding the later models were bolted, not rivetted. Also, given the previous tranny concerns, I was wondering if the engine repairs & exhaust mods took a car that was down on power (plugged cats, poor compression) and increased the torque enough to overwhelm a transmission that was already weak. Regardless, we'll check things out, before we take the plunge for a rebuilt transmission.

I guess this is the obvious question but anyway is there enough trans fluid in the trans, if it needs a rebuild then you only need to find a Mercedes Benz trans rebuilder they can fix it if they know what there doing, while the trans is out re build the torque tube and replace the torque converter front bearings, also flush all of the trans fluid lines so no contaminates get into the rebuilt trans
