Question Door Mirror Internals

1984 euro S2 4.7L 16V RHD
Hi All

Going to sort my door mirrors out this w/e. Drivers side does not move, passenger side only turns in/out regardless of adjuster position (no up/down)

I have been studying the wiring diagrams, they seem to show only one motor, how is the movement changed from in/out to up/down? is there some sort of solenoid operated change over mechanism within the mirror?

Is there a preferred method to disassemble the door mirrors themselves? i guess i am dealing with dirty connectors/switches/motor brushes. so i will need to pull the mirrors apart to RR them.

many Thanks Guys. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

John,

On my '81 , I found that the mirror has a solenoid that causes the one motor to either work the left/right adjuster OR the up/down adjuster. I had similar problems and found more than one cause including corroded contacts, mismatched or unlatched contact pairs (at the mirror connector), as well as dirty contacts inside the mirror toggel switch. BTW, the mirror toggle switch can be dis-assembled and cleaned but be careful as I seem to remember there are a few small parts (springs and/or ball bearings?) that can fall out and are easily lost. Guess how I know that one.

As far as accessing the mirror components, I don't know if this is the best way but this is how I did it. Its been a while but I think this is accurate. I pulled off the mirror glass (its just held in by 3 clips that are epoxied to the back of the mirror glass... (pray the epoxy doesn't let go or you'll have to re-epoxy the clip(s) to get the glass back on). Remove the defroster leads on the back side of the glass. With the glass removed, you can access 3 screws that attach the mirror mechanics to the mirros metal portion that attaches to the door. If memeory serves, the screws are recessed and there are 3 access holes so you can get an 8 mm nut driver on them. remove all 3. Basically, that rubber bezel that goes around the glass is a molded assembly that holds the motor, solenoid, gears and the sheet aluminum mirror backing plate that actually moves during adjustment. Once the 3 screws are removed, that whole assembly comes off the car and is left hanging only by the wires/connector. Once you have that out, you can unplug the connector and go to work.

best of luck.

I suggest you start with the toggel switch. The contacts get corroded which results in intermitant operation. Least wise that what tends to ail Gretch..........

many thanks guys, sounds very similar to previous mirrors i've done battle with in the past.

in some strange way its almost therapeutic to get the various bits and bobs to come back to life. i haven't found anything actually broken yet, all non functioning parts have, so far, responded to a bit of tlc.....testament to their construction i guess.

just completed RR the rear wiper. dirty motor brushes, beautifully made motor. it has little brush retaining clips built in so you can side the end plate over the commutator without the brushes getting fouled up. so much thought has gone into these cars...tis amazin'

cheers again <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
