Post DIY Powder Coating

Has anyone done powder coating themselves? From what I have learned from the vendors, it doesn't look too difficult.

I was thinking of picking up an old electric oven to dedicate to the process - that has a low SAF (spousal approval factor) - and setting it up in the garage. That seems to be the biggest issue.

Feel free to express your thoughts! <img src="http://216.40.249.192/s/otn/alienz/7.gif" alt=" - " />

I've been considering the same thing, as I am preparing to take off the valve covers and intake for that purpose. Harbor Freight has a machine that lists for $90 but is on sale every other month for $60. Apparently the same unit does quite a good job (according to a guy who knows a guy...). The electric oven would be required, but then I would feel compelled to get a pressure blaster and a blast cabinet to strip the parts with. All said and done, just a little $250 plus whatever a cheap used oven would cost.

From what I understand of the process it is hard to screw up, but I would also like to hear from somebody who has done this themselves.

I have...Practically my son's entire 924 engine, calipers, front end stuff, etc...

I also did my cam cover, intake manifold, distributor housing and cooling parts on my 951...

I'm sold on the process and after you take it out of the oven (and let it cool) it is indestuctable...

I bought my gun from <a href="http://www.eastwoodco.com/aspfiles/HC_Landing.asp?UID=2003030819094381" target="_blank">The Eastwood Company - Hotcoat</a> but if I was to but another gun it would definitely be from Brian at <a href="http://www.columbiacoatings.com/" target="_blank">Columbia Coatings</a> ...

I still buy all my powder from him and it is of superior quality...Better than the stuff that came with my Hot Coat gun...

Standard Disclaimer: No affiliation with either company. Just my honest opinion based on experience.

Best of Luck and I highly recommend it!

Wow Mike B that is good info! I had no idea that stuff could be so cheap. You could spend about the ammount you would spend to have your intake and cam covers coated and still have the equipment to coat other parts. Definately on my shoppint list!

I found this link to Powder Coat Magazine. Looks like they have good info on all aspects of powder coating. I didn't even think about doing this myself until I saw Mike's reply. Here is the link:
