Can I get some help on my 1984 5 speed? Will a 1985 5 speed bolt right in to the 1984 without any mods? Does Porsche make an upgrade kit for the 1984 syncros or are they just OEM? Do we just make the repairs and hope for the best? Thanks.

In 85 Porsche redesigned the manual tranny. Went with Borg Warner and changed the selector forks among some others. The short of it is no it is not a bolt right in upgrade. Find an 85 or 86 to get the Borg Warner, go with the 87 or newer for even better reliability.

The 85 5 speed transmission will bolt right in to replace the 84. I've replaced my 80 transmission with an 89. The 78-79 cases were a different length.
You cannot modify a pre 85 box with the upgraded syncros.

I must have read my Tech publication on 5sp trannies wrong. It left me with the impression that they weren't interchangeable.

Thanks for the help. I already have an '84 which is a project car right now. I am looking to get it as reliable as possible as I put it all together, including the upgrades as I go. This site has been the greatest help, usually without posting, just reading!
