Post 928 back from surgery, needs some outpatient work...

I got the 928 back from the shop where a huge number of things had been done to get it closer to the original state. I won't even tell you how much it all was, but I'm sure that many of you can guess that it wasn't cheap!

The car still has a problem that will need some followup work, but at least I got to drive it. The idle is high and the car will sometimes "fade" when accelerating hard. It's almost as if it's being starved for air or fuel, with the latter being the current favorite by the mechanics. But when it goes, it goes like the proverbial bat out of hell! Wooohooo! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

The RMB really brings out the sound on this beast, but it's almost too loud at times. This thing sounds like an American musclecar now, and it certainly "feels" like it's more powerful than before. Of course some of this might also be due in part to removing the Frankenstein hacks. I guess it's no louder than many other cars and bikes on the road, but wow, it's loud!

Anyway, next up is a full detailing to get it ready for a charity concours on June 9th. I'll need to work on a few things, but it's in great shape and looks spectacular already. I got three comments on it within the space of about 15 minutes, including:

- At an auto parts store, guy #1 said "Look, it's a Ferrari." Guy #2 goes to look closer and says "No, it's a Porsche. That's a 928, the coolest Porsche ever made."

- At a 7-11, two guys in the parking lot are walking past and gawking. One says "Love that 928. That's my favorite Porsche. It's a beauty."

- At the smog-test facility, an old lady said "What model is that? I never knew that anything made by Porsche had a hatcback. That's a really beautifule car."

BTW, the car passed the smog-test with flying colors. I did get a bit upset when the guy testing it "downshifted" into reverse when pulling up to the testing machine. It's not the first time and there was no real harm done, but it's annoying that reverse is in such an odd position.

The gas cap also passed. One guy looked at it, noticed that the outer housing was cracked and a part missing, and showed it to another guy. I was thinking the worst, but the other guy just waved and said it was okay. No testing was done on it as they don't have anything that fits. I did buy a good one off of Dozman, just to be safe.

Cheers!

Hey Dozman,

Thanks, I can't wait.

BTW, do you have the rear interior side panels for sale? I don't know what to call these, but they're what you see if you look in the rear side windows. Mine have pulled back a bit from the side and some silly PO apparently tried to staple them back in place. If you do have them, I'm interested!

Skip-

In as far as the high idle is concerned...my 87 did the same. Spent the better part of two weeeks trying to figure it out. I'd be glad to share with you some tips if you're interested.

What maintenance did you have performed?

The 88 has slightly smaller primary mufflers than the 87 - which might be the major cause for the 'loud' RMB. Mine doesn't really 'sing' until ~4K rpms. No matter though, we love the 'tunes'.

Since you're in Boulder...maybe you'd like a fun run to Sharkansas later next month?

Sounds like you and Snowy could pace in together.

Hi Jay,

The big things were replacing the steering rack, motor mounts, cats, and lots and lots of hoses, belts, and so on. A previous owner had done some nasty things to the car using generic NAPA parts, and in many cases things had simply been ignored that shouldn't have been. The interior is really nice and the exterior is great, but the poor engine and related bits had suffered at the hands of some cruel owners!

In addition to the fixes, an RMB and a set of "Big Blacks" was added. I'm probably a bit nuts for pumping money into this car, but I've always wanted one and don't mind overly much. My goal is to get it in good running condition, with the mechanicals matching the rest.

Is Sharkansas a reference to the Sharks in the Ozarks? I hadn't considered it, but maybe I will. I'll read the threads on that for more information.

Regarding the tips on the idle, I'd appreciate it if you could email some too me. The mechanics are really good, but their knowledge of the 928 is limited and they're looking things up, calling other mechanics, etc. When I drop it off in early June they're planning to fix the things that they couldn't this go round.

Hi Skip:

The staples on your rear inside panels are Porsche standard - they helped keep the leather in place, and are exposed, now that the leather has shrunk.

The real bitch about those panels is to remove them from the car, and put them back in. You can always have them recovered - I've heard of and seen quite a few examples that came out nicely with new material. Some people recover them with matching vinyl, to avoid future shrinking, one guy just had the lower part redone in vinyl, and left the leather on the rest of the panel - you could hardly tell...

If you get panels from a different 928, make sure it has the same speaker cutouts, or cutouts for the speaker setup you desire. If you have them recovered, you have more options in that respect.

All the other stuff you are reporting sounds pretty much like my last experience. Car in nice cosmetical condition, but idiot mechanics had worked on it ("Well, the 928 has a 5 Liter V8 and automatic like a Mercedes 500. It is also made in the same town, so they must be the same mechanically... Let's take it to the Mercedes shop down the road!").

However, I still believe it is better to buy a car in a nice cosmetic condition, than one that is mechanically better but beat up. Body and interior repairs are at least as expensive as the mechanics, but then the car is no loger in original condition. Mine is...

Have fun!
