License suspension, how long?

License suspension, how long?
Well, Johnny Law has been following me everywhere with his *&$#%ing radar and laser guns, and has ticketed me enough times in the past year for speeding that I'm in serious danger of a suspension. I haven't changed the way I drive at all since I bought my 928 in 10/01, and have actually eased off of the throttle slamming since I bought it. Its not that I'm a wreckless driver or I drive 20mph over the limit all the time, its that I get caught doing a little bit over, and I mean a LITTLE, like many of us, but its been annoyingly frequent, and every time its by a cop whos hidden very well, either on the freeway with no lights on, ah screw it... Enough rambling, how long will I lose my license for? This is for the 4 speeding tickets within 2 years "habitual speeder" suspension.

Also, since I'm planning on a worst-case scenario of losing the license for a year, I'm looking for a loophole. Something like getting an out of state license before the suspension. I've thought about getting a PO box in a neighboring state for residential purposes, but I know some states, like california (?), check records or don't allow a PO box for residency. I know some states on the other hand don't care at all. Would something like this work? What state could I do this in? Any ideas on Canada, or another idea altogether? Oh, and please, if anyone is thinking about using this as a cheap shot to say something stupid like, "well thats what you get for breaking the law" or some other BS, just save your fingers... Thats the last thing I wanna hear, and its just plain dumb. Everyone speeds here and there, and we all get caught for it. I just have had horrible luck with it. And may I stress once more, I'm not out to try and get tickets and I don't speed in excess. Thanks in advance guys! I'm really praying I don't get a suspension

Did you simply pay your tickets in the past or did you go to traffic court?
I hear many people talk about pleading to a judge or administrator that their license is crucial to their employment. Probably overdone, but maybe an avenue to consider.
If it were me, I would hire an attorney and get a hearing, if your state doesn't call you in for one. I have seen in some DUI cases where the accused completes a drunk driving school before the court date. It looks good to the authorities that the offender volunteered for a school and took the course prior to court, showing they have taken responsibility and have reached out for help. (total B.S., but whatever works). Maybe there is a safe driver course you can take to show you have attempted to get educated and want to stop your speeding habits.
Good luck

Barry,
Sorry for your misfortune. These beasts will get you trouble for sure. I can highly recommend the Valentine 1 radar detector. Worth it's weight in gold. You'll know about those pesky revenuers long before they know about you. It will pay for itself the first time it goes off while you're over the limit.

Barry- get this book Beat the Cops by Alex Carol on Amazon.com or other book sites. It will explain what to do, fight every ticket with a laywer. Speeding tickets at night can be beat every time. Reason! Too dark for the cop to really see it was you. Resonable excuse. Other state residency set up will help but you must do it right. Don't use a P O Box. Need a friend or relatives address for it to work. Good luck. If OJ can get off, so can you! Remember, this is America. Play it smart.

CA trades driving records with every other state, so it's out. also, most states trade with neighboring states, so OR and ID are out.
Nevada might be a good choice, i was considering it a while back. get to Reno, get a private box at a place like Mailboxes Etc. then when you give the state your address you can just give the street address and "#xxx" instead of "PO Box" which sticks out. that way the DMV may not catch that it's a box. or they may not care (WA doesn't). then you just pay the mailbox place to forward anything you get in that box to you here in WA. then go get your NV driver's license.
having a relative there with a "real" street address would be best.
or join the army and get a military drivers license. then the state can't touch you...

A 928 looks like it's speeding sitting still. Police will single me out of a group of cars going faster than me for that reason. There were a couple of times under the right conditions (open road, no other cars) when I took it to 130+ but ran out of road quickly. Felt safe and very smooth - difficult to judge speed in a 928 without looking at the speedo. 99% of the time I just don't speed, even though rice rockets, Camaros, Mustangs, SUV soccer moms, etc. are blowing past me 20mph over the speed limit. Seems like everyone wants to race me. I've had one speeding ticket - 32mph in a 20mph school zone (I didn't see the sign) ouch! Cost about $200. I hate people who speed in school zones! Last year I was headed north towards Dallas on Interstate 35 at 3am in a heavy downpour doing about 70mph in a 60. Some guy was tail-gating me. When I slowed down, he slowed down but would not pass. When I sped up, he sped up and stayed on my tail. So I kicked it up to about 95-100 until he was pretty far behind me, then returned to about 70. He caught up with me, this time his car lit up like a Christmas tree. It was the dreaded police in the small town of DeSoto just south of Dallas. I pulled over, turned on the flashers and dome light, rolled down the window and kept my hands on the wheel. He approached cautiously with his hand on his gun. Asked for my license and proof of insurance. I told him I thought he was some guy tail-gating me and I just wanted to put some safe distance between us. He said, "That was a bad idea." I knodded in agreement. While he went back to run the license check, I thought, "He must have clocked me at 100." 20mph+ over the speed limit and you normally go to jail. My sphincter tightened and the back of my neck burned as he returned and handed me my license. To my surprise he said, "I notice you don't have a radar detector. I want you to slow down. I wouldn't want to see that thing get out from under you. By the way, nice car, how fast will it go?" I said I didn't know. He let me off with a warning. I thanked him and promised to slow down.

In LA, I find that the police tend to leave the fancy cars alone. When they see a Porsche, they tend to assume it is an older, responsible person with some $$$... But when they see a rice rocket ripping along, they assume it is a kid, with no insurance, up to no good. When I had a bright and racy looking car, I used to get pulled over every single weekend. Now, with the Porsche, I have very rarely been pulled over.
I've been in your situation before.
One ticket away from suspension.
What did I do?
I sold my car, and drove a nondescript Mercury Sable station wagon for 2 years.
Cleared my record, and cleared the way for the 928...

I hate police that are just on the payroll to collect revenue...
Police that go out and look for murderers, car thieves, and abusers, kick a$$! I love those police. They have my thumbs up. But there are those in city hall, who send out police on "traffic" patrol, with the prime motivator to collect $$$ for the govt... I will fight them at all costs, with jammers, scanners, chips detectors, radar detectors, and lawyers...

Barry, how old are you?
When I first got my licence at 16, I drove slower than I do today, but back then I got more tickets. The first ticket I got was for flooring it from a green light, to 90kph. Without noticing the marked police car right behind me at teh light. Stupid eh?
That was 7 years ago. In the last two years, I've been speeding mroe and more, but in a safer manner, keeping a lookout far far ahead, and I spot cruisers a MILE away.
I got my licence suspended too, so don't worry, it's all part of the learning process. If you've paid your tickets, it's just a matter of time before DOT sends you the letter. If not, dispute them while you can!
It's not about slowing down, it's about knowing WHEN to slow down. (And knowing when it's safe to go faster)

I will have had a drivers license for 30 years next week. "ZERO" speeding tickets. (About 200 "Warnings", though) Don't lie, immediately pull over. Stay in the car with both hands on the wheel. Don't make a move until asked to, or you tell them in advance what you are about to do. Be polite, answer all questions with a "Sir" or "Mamm". Keep your inspection, plates, insurance ect, current. Let them know your a Nurse working at the local ER. Works for me.

I rarely get tickets, but when I do get one I give it to a specialized ticket attorney. They get rid of it every time for about $70 - $100 dollars. I am not sure if that works if you get a lot of tickets in a short time period though. I have resolved about 5 tickets in the past 8 years like that.
Last year I got nailed going 87 in a 70 zone on the Turnpike and it was in a real rural area. I called around for an attorney and the cheapest one I found wanted $600, so I signed up for traffic school over the internet. I only had to pay $60 for the ticket, $30 for the class (spend three hours on the Internet filling out stupid questions) and got no points.
I am not sure if you can do the same in other States though.
regards,
Sab.

Steve J, you're story reminds me of my last encounter with the law after 6+ years of no tickets. I do a pretty regular Dulles-Detroit flight on Tuesday mornings which puts me on the road at 5am to catch the outbound flight at 6:15. 2 miles from my neighborhood in the 84 AT, I turn right onto a 2 lane divided road with 3 lanes all full and stopped at the light that narrow down into it (29 & 605 in Warrenton). All I can see is a sea of stopped headlights pointed down the road I'm getting on. I don't slow for the corner doing about 30 and proceed to get on the gas cause my light just went yellow and 3 lanes of traffic are coming. The car is running great, speedo's working so I just stay in the gas... notice another pair of headlights coming in the left lane. And he's gaining. Well... we can't have that. So speedo rolling past 85 the blue lights go on. Doh!!
"Good morning sir, where you going?"
"To the airport, sir."
"You work there?"
"No sir, I'm catching a flight"
looks around inside the car...
"Well, try to keep it under 80."
"Yes, sir.
walks away.
Made my day.

Thanks all for the replies! I have contested every single ticket I got, and so far have had one dismissed, all with attorneys. Maybe that will better explain my luck. I've used a deffered sentancing on one, so I can't use another, but I really think I'm going to get screwed here, and the Devek Days drive is coming up in August, and I'm supposed to drive down there for my brother's wedding a couple days before. So, does anyone know how long the suspension could be for? Thanks!

"Washington state does not have a point system. If a driver receives four moving violations in one year or five moving violations in two years, the Driver License will be suspended for 30 days unless the driver attends a driver awareness group meeting."
Hope that's of some help... Sounds like you might still have room for one more before you're to the point of immediate jeopardy, if you're only at three in two years at present.
I can sympathize with your concern, though. I'm an eighteen year old, male driver of a 928 and a rollover prone Jeep, that's a trifle worried myself. I can't say I haven't sped, but like to think I'm extremely conscientious about my speed and other traffic laws, being that my insurance is already through the roof to begin with. A while back, I was covering a shift at a different store than usual, and was unfamiliar with the route home. Coming home in perfectly clear, dry summer weather at about 1:00AM, I merged onto a highway, completely deserted other than myself, that I assumed to be a 65 mph road, as most major PA roadways that aren't under some form of construction are. Going 68, I was clocked by a Trooper and informed that it was a 45 zone. The guy didn't cut me any slack, and I wasn't expecting much (though he did try to cite me for violating Junior Driver curfew restrictions, being behind the wheel past 11:00PM on a Friday night, which I got him to cross out since most HS seniors don't go out partying wearing a Blockbuster polo and nametag). The next day, I went back with a digital camera, because I was somewhat certain that I hadn't missed a sign before he flicked the rollers on, and found one (the only one between the onramp I took and where he nailed me, mind you) that was almost completely obscured by a tree that had fallen, likely in a storm a few nights prior...I took the picture with me to the magistrate, who would only knock it down to 55 in a 45, which I guess was better than the other option. After a year, those two points should've cleared, but just a few weeks ago I got tagged again coming back to school exiting the Carlisle, PA Turnpike interchange for not coming to a complete stop. I admit, I didn't, but there's absolutely no merging lane, and the off ramp leads directly on to PA11, a densely trafficed 55mph road...when you see an opening, you take it. If you come to a complete stop, you're going to wait and you're going to back up traffic until you have enough room to safely accelerate from a standing stop and merge (not exactly easy in a somewhat underpowered Cherokee, though still, it was stupid of me and regardless whether I think it should be a yield sign or not, it is a stop sign and there is a cop stationed under a bridge a few yards back from it waiting for idiots like me). So I'm up to five points between the two citations now, and if I see rollers behind me again, I'm basically just going to have to cut up my own license. Pretty much I’m getting passed by everyone and their grandmother now, do three second stops at every intersection, and make other people drive anytime I can! I’m working at a Days Inn to help get through college that’s a few miles too far from walking distance...I lose my license, the 928 goes up for sale...
Anyway, best of luck to you BJ, and to everyone else trying to dodge the cops! Someone’s gotta buy the donuts, though...
