LOW OIL ---> Dead Engine
I saw a 5-litre 32V Benz this weekend with a badly knocking rod. 90k miles. Owner replaced oil and filter. Oil level normal. Drove for a week. Noticed oil was low (no warning lights) and put in 2 quarts. No idea where the oil went. Noticed a knocking sound, and revved it up. Immediately became a LOUD rod big end knock.
Buh-bye engine!!
So, check your oil level.

Heinrich,
Late 928's have what appears to be an electronic oil level sensor in the pan. However, when pulling apart two 1990 cars, both of them had a detached wire on the sensor. Ive mentioned this before but i figured now is a good time to do so again. Dont wait to see a low oil light, i would imagine that many of these are broken.
I am not skilled at all with the soldering iron, but i suspect that even i could pull the sendor out and solder the wire back together to fix this as opposed to buying the new sensor for god knows how much.

No, Porsche assembled the cars. The front of the body was different from a regular E-Class, so Mercedes could not run these on the regular production line in Sindelfingen. I've never heard that Porsche also built the engines.
