Since I frequently go back to Germany I just looked into buying a shark on my next trip. Very interesting the price difference vs. the US market. Especially on the later GTS models. I wonder if we where to buy and import a few of them if we could get a better deal on DOT conversion...

the few remaining bonded approved certification labs are very proud of what they do . They could spend time converting a $250,000 Ferrari $500,000 959 or a $25,000 928 their fees seem to be based on doing high dollar cars . It is also nearly impossible to get a fixed price fee before they see the car naturally by that time you have purchased and paid to ship it to the U S .....they can hold your car for ransom ...little unexpected extra problems !! all solved by $$$$$ . If you get it all done some insurance companies value gray market cars at 50% a U S A car which can be a problem . And the State of California has their own restrictions !

I've heared that being a German citizen I could bring a car in for six month or a year. I figured once it's in it might be easier to get the paperwork done.
Does anyone know?

I've seen foreign cars with foreign license plates on different occasions when I was in Florida. I assume these were cars that people on vacations here brought with them for use while here. Get permission for six months, go to Toronto for a little while, get another six months?

It works the other way around. I have a friend who bought a Harley here in Miami, took it back and simply pays for his registration here in Florida every year. He has been driving it in Europe for the past five years with a Florida tag.

I'm probably as German as it gets, but never even considered buying a 928 in Germany. Sure, they are cheap there, but dealing with the hassle of bringing one over here? No thanks!

The article by James Morrison serves as a good warning. It also shows that when it comes to cars, the US does not really support the idea of free trade.

WARNING: Strong opinion to follow!

The US government is basically saying that cars from other countries are not safe. In other words, Americans who would drive a such car would put themselves at risk. Weird. Why are there so many less accident deaths per mile driven in Germany, when the cars there don't meet the American idea of a safe car? And Germany doesn't even have a general speed limit!

Are warning beepers and labels, sealed beam or H5 headlights and side markers really going to make the car safer? On a 928 S4, the front and rear lights wrap far around the corners - I just can't see why side markers are necessary. And they break up the style of the car!

Why does a used car from abroad have to meet new car emissions standards, rather than the standards for a same-age used car in the US?

And, lastly, why are there such strict requirements for new cars and cars that are imported, while many States don't care whether you even have a fender or hood, let alone working lights on your car?

I can't help it, but some of these regulations sound hypocritical to me. A case where the government does not really help their citizens. Or do I miss something here?

It would be simple to take my US model 928 to Germany and get it inspected and registered there. No bonded labs holding cars hostage. Pick it up from the harbor/airport with a temporary license, and drive it home or to the mechanic.

Then get a spec sheet from the manufacturer. Change the lights (incl. removing/disconnecting side markers), get Porsche spec tires, and maybe a few other minor things. Make sure everything works. Then take it to the TÜV for a complete inspection and smog test - done. For those things that can't feasably be changed (like glass), they'd add a special approval to the vehicle documents.

I always thought, Europeans are the most buerocratic...

Sales Tax! It's all about sales tax and whither or not the USA government is getting what it considers it's fair share of tax revenue. How are they going to get any money from you if you buy a car over seas and ship it over???
