Default Tow bar / trailer hitch on a 1990 S4

Hi all,

I did several searches but coudn't find the one where a member build one with a removeable coupling that required a hole in the bumper bar behind the number plate?

Could anybody please send me a link or a name and email address?
I would like to have one made up for me as I am planning on using the shark as an every day driver and get rid of all the other cars.....

Thanks and best regards from Down Under

Hi Villhuer,

apperently so. Fixing point are the same, but bumper bar extends lower on the S4.
The solution I am looking for is far more elegant, as the hole for the coupling is hidden behind the number plate if not attached and therefore totally invisible.
i just would like a picture and / or a drawing before I rip the bumper bar off my car and start measuring everything up.....

Thanks and best regards from Down Under

Factory solution isn't pretty. Plastic outer bumper needs to be cut. I would not trust other method than factory unless it is attached to same positions as factory.

This what you were looking for? I think I have another image somewhere as well, but can't seem to find it at the moment.

Hi Andrew,
ah-thanks for that. Seems he did mount it straight under the bumper under the PU skin? I doubt it will pull a 1.5 ton trailer that way, though?
I might have to come up with a mix of the ORIS/OEM version and this one

thanks and best regards

Martin,

I made and installed one of these hitches from the sketch shown in Andrew Schauer's posting, after I'd seen it on Randy Faunce's car (and gotten the sketch from him). He used it to pull a small trailer to and from track events with a set of 4 tires and a tool box on it.
I have used mine for the same thing (on 2 occasions, I've taken the tool box and tire mounts off and put a complete 928 engine on it to move it ~15 miles). I have been using this for ~4 years, first on an '88 and now on an '89 S4. I've probably put ~6K miles on the trailer during those trips to and from the tracks that are 250 to 700 miles away from my home. NO isssues!!!

That would be a Class I hitch right? Also have you had a chance to look at it to see if the bumper shocks are being pushed/pulled out by the trailer?
