I was trying to adjust the hood to sit more flushly with the fenders and loosened the nuts that hold the hood to the hinges on the left and right side near the windscreen end of the hood. hinges. Once they were loose I closed the hood before retightening them. Now they are loose that end of the hood lifts up about an inch at the windscreen end but I can't release the hood to open it and retighten the bolts in the right position. I can hear the hood release mechanism disengage when I pull the release handle but I think the pressure from the hydraulic lifts (brand new ones) are pushing the hood towards the front bumper. I can reach underneath to get to the release mechanism and the lever but it still wont budge!

This sounds like a two person job. Have someone else hold the hood in the correct location while you open the front from under the car. The hood pin is not centred and is catching on the side.

Tried the two person approach but no luck. The hood looks like its seated perfectly, right where I want it ever-so-slightly pushed forward. If I try to push the pin at the front from underneath, which way do I need to try moving the hood / pin? I can't see where its catching.

You have to center the pin while you are depressing the slide lever beside it. You have a good view from under the front of the car. Have the second person move the hood ever so gently. The spring will pop the hood open when you get the pin center. Good Luck.

Reach up through the front grill. Grab the hood release cable right where it goes into the latch, and pull. If necessary, push on the pointy cone shaped thing that goes through the latch hole to center it while pulling the release cable. When the hood pops up, center the cone in the latch before you close the hood all the way again. This is done by adjusting the bolts on either side of the hinge mechanisms.

I put on new front hood brackets - removed them and wire wheeled and heat clear coated them and used new yellow chromate M8 x 12 screws.
The hood closes but not perfectly.
Sometimes the hood is too long and bends.
Sometimes the hood is too short which presents a gap up front.
And side gaps can be non linear.
I've unclipped and pulled off the two hood struts during this hood adjustment/realignment process as the struts were pushing the hood too far forward.
Any one have any suggestions as its a PITA loosening/adjusting the two sides screws on each side, then shifting the hood, but then lifting the hood and having it shift back on me.
If i had to call it there was a 1/4 inch gap from the front screw and the end of the front of the bracket - but i lost the wear mark on the paint as i removed the paint to leave the bracket with a raw metal look.
and my goal is to get the hood to close snugly (not bent/too long and not short from the front bumper. like it used to.
I realize its somewhat insignificant but its one of those things once you see a gap or inconsistent gaps you can't unsee and to me it implies the car may have been in an accident. .

it sounds like you have hatch shocks on the hood,
you will snap off one of the ***** if you use the hatch shocks on the hood,
as they are 100 lb force VS the hood shocks that are 35 lb
That said to adjust the hood,
Spray the hood hinges with lubricant do every connection.
Then remove the hood latch 2 nuts and a few washers ,
Then remove the hood shocks from one end
close the hood make sure the front edge is back from hitting the beading,
check the side gaps adjust as necessary,
adjust the rear height .
Then connect the hood shocks .
close the hood and see how the rear height is,
adjust as necessary.
Once this is good then fit the hood latch with the washers and the nuts finger snug,
close the hood and tap the latch assembly so it is centered over the closing receiver hole.
wrench snug the nuts then latch the hood see how things line up, adjust as necessary.
Final tighten the latch nuts
