Post Repainting

Hello!
I'm pretty new to this forum and happy to see a whole 928 community here!

I've had my shark for awhile now and the time has come for a repaint (clearcoat is peeling off). My big issue is twofold. First, I'd like a professional job to be done - I've heard that this more than likely means taking many exterior parts of the car off (I also understand this does cost quite a bit). Is it even necessary to ask a shop that could do this if they know 928's? I guess what I'm asking here is there anything about taking a 928's body panels off that requires a Porsche specialist? From what I can see in the shop manuals it doesn't look like it, but I am quite a bit guarded about letting a non-Porsche shop start tinkering with the car. Has anyone any advice (or experience) about repainting 928's or the right questions to ask any shops that could do it?

My second issue is well, colour. I love the colour my car has now (Meteor Grey Metallic on an '86.5 928S). However, I've become very partial to more modern gunmetals and greys (the 2002 BMW M3's grey is awesome, and so is the 996's Slate Grey). Burgundy has always been a favourite of mine, and for that matter, so is silver. I don't plan to (ever) sell my car, and so I have no problems going for colours that aren't the original one. Here're a few pics of the colours I'd love to have on my shark:

<a href="http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshot.html?id=31999" target="_blank">http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshot.html?id=31999</a>

<a href="http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshot.html?id=32000" target="_blank">http://www.momentoffame.com/snapshot.html?id=32000</a>

I love 'em all, and that's the problem. So here's where you can help me decide: shall I put this to a vote?

What do think should be a cool colour for this car?

Regards,
-saphriel

Slate Grey is great!!!!! And it wouldn't be off too much from the original color.

Changing to a diff color, even black, will require repainting the door jambs and engine compartment. Cost more.

You could go a couple shades lighter or darker than the original and get away with it. I like something between the original and the Artic Silver.

What KB said!
Stick with what's on the sHARk now.
The cost of unneeded detailing is prohibitive.
Underhood inside of rear hatch sills, jambs...
pulling the inner door panels the list goes on. there are costs associated with removal/re-installation and they are high.
Any good autobody repair shop should be able to 'strip' your car, paint and re-assemble with no difficulty.
Other colors are attractive but with a new finish I don't think you will be disappointed with a 'Buff' Slate Gray.

Hey thanks for the input!
I figure since i like so many of the colours, all things being equal, the deciding factor would then be cost.

Yeah it looks like Slate Grey will be it!

p.s. Hey check it out, some poor soul is harrassing me in Moment Of Fame. Must've been that fool who was trying his hardest to catch me on track...

Cool

I prefer the artic silver, but one of my all-time favorites is a Volkswagen color called "Rock Grey Metallic", color code LK7V.

How did you change the colors like that?

My shark is Granatrot Metallic and when I repaint it - not too distant future - I am going with Arena Red.....
Same color basically but the Arena Red is a deeper tone of my original color.
Yep, stay with your color and either lighten or darken it a little.

Yes, the paint shop can and will screw up your 928. We have seen sheetrock screws holding on the bumper covers, cut mirror wires (they don't unplug!), misaligned (and scarred) sunroofs, misaligned headlamps, etc., etc., etc.

Hi Normy & NYDolfan: I used Photoshop to basically alter the colour of the car (I used the Hue Adjustment tools with Colorize set on). It works real easily as long as the car isn't black. If the car is black you can still change it but it requires a slightly different technique.

Hi Wally: Serious?! That's really terrible to hear that some people would put sheetrock screws in and think they can get away with it! I hope the Porsche shop I take my car to for servicing could recommend a reputable shop that knows our cars, then. Thanks for the warning

My advice is leave it the same color and then find a good shop which uses Glasurit, or Sikkins.

NO LAQUER PRODUCTS or **** out os a tube!, they are stone age technology up against todays erethane systems.

Ahh. One of my almost favorite subjects.

Unless you plan to alter the car (rollbar...etc), and go non-stock to race, please, PLEASE, keep it the exact same.

Reason...Well, these are gonna be a form of classic, and if you can keep original engine, color, etc it will be worth all the more.

Secondly, unless you pull off all panels, trim, (engine to get that area), your gonna see the color differences and hate youself for it later.
(even if the paint job is superior, selling it may not be so easy, you just limited yourself).

Find a good paint shop that will get you a nice Urethane base/clear spray. (and even Dupont and PPG make excellent paints if you dont go with the original type like Sikins..etc). It will be nice!

Although, like you said, If you're never gonna sell it, you might as well enjoy it how you would like it. (just passing on my previous, "Wish I would have never done this" list of items)

Wally speaks the truth...
If I ever figure out how to upload to the renn.,
I'll post my sheetrocked tail light assemblies.
If you are paying for a product.
BE SAFE INSPECT IT!

I'd rather spend the money on a better quality job with new rubber and trim, than a color change that requires all kids of additional work in areas that otherwise would not have to be redone.

Budget about $1,000 for new rubber and trim, about $4,000 for a superior paint job in the same color, and about twice as much for a color change done right. Who has $4,000 to waste these days? If you do, you can use those to redo your interior as well...

BTW: My car is slate grey. It's stealth, but also boring, real boring. I'd love to have Cobalt Blue or Amazon Green Metallic, but unless I win the lottery, I think the car is always going to be slate grey...
