Post Timing belt light came on

Hey folks,

Just took delivery of my 88 928 S4 a few days ago. I'll post that story in a bit. Put 89 miles on it so far and the T-belt tens. light came on as I was pulling into the driveway. Stop and restarted the car and the light is not on now. Just had the engine pulled and everything gone through including t-belt, H20 pump & tensioner. So what do you think is up? Afraid to start it up now.

THis happened to me too! I'll right a list of what could be the possibilities:

1. If you don't know or have any records of a timing belt replacement, get them replaced immediately.

2. Sometimes a corroded connection to the tensioner sensor can cause a false light.

3. Tension could be off ever so slightly and may need to be adjusted.

I highly reccomend a mechanical inspection. Take it to someone experienced in Porsches and knows about 928s.

Get the tbelt tension checked.

Check that the electrical connectors are good and clean.

Check that the tensioner is full of 90wt oil.

Don't ignore a belt ten light...potentially very costly. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

Hi Tim--

Glad you finally received the car!

On the light:

Take it quickly/immediately to a specialist to get the tension checked. The boys in the Hollywood area are recommending German Auto Art, see Marcus. Otherwise-- I had my post-belt retension done at the local dealer (Rusnak in Pasadena) for about $100. It was a time vs. cost played off against convenience, and they did it nicely. Their lot crew decided to wash the car after the work was done, and... well, you've seen the car and a 'lot boy' wash is not something I'd normally allow.

Be sure and give a call when you have a minute or two to show off the car. Mine's down in OC until the new garage extension is added. We are splitting time between the old house (the one you visited before) and the new place a couple driving miles away. Just let me know when it's convenient.

Also-- If you are thinking about doing the tension check yourself, 928 Int'l (and others) have a spiffy and simple tension check tool available for less than $70. I'm going to need one by next winter, and would co-op some of the cost. It would be added to our SoCal tool pool anyway. let me know!

First, thanks every one for responding.

Update…
After posting on Rennlist, I Spoke with the mechanic in Indiana after the first light came on and he stated all parts up front were new and that it may be a loose sensor wire and if it lit again to call and we’d go from there. Well, 120 miles later T-belt light sensor has “lit it’s light” AGAIN in it’s ever so subtle manner while sitting at a stoplight. Damn it, I knew you guys were right.

First light got my attention; second light is simply freaking me especially after looking twice through the $5300 previous service bill to make sure all items were completed.

So, now it’s LATE Friday and I’m doomed to driving the truck again this weekend.

Question…I live in the San Fernando valley of Los Angeles. Has anyone had any experience with NARW Porsche Independent Service in Reseda, CA? I’d like someone to take a gander at the T-belt light to make sure something is not afoul and who knows how to us a belt tensioner gauge. I know Dr. Bob has had some luck with Rusnak in Pasadena. Any recommendations?

P.S…Hope to start attending some events if I can get “sharkey” of the “DL” list.

Tim

P.S. P.S.

I did poke around to the best of my ability and did not spot a loose connection. It is tight in there tho!
