Question Headlights will not retract back down

My father was coming home and when he turned the headlights off on the car they would not retract on our 87 S4. Does anyone know what the problem is??????? I hear no motor sound what so ever accept the click indicating the fuel injectors pumping...if that is them.

UPDATE: We removed the pivot bracket on the headlights and they came down. Of course that is routine of them but there was no jam obviously. THere is a possibility that maybe the headlight motor went out on the car. Does anyone know the life expectancy on these? or could this be a relay? if it is, what relay is it?

Did you turn off the lights AFTER turning off the engine? The lights only retract, if the ignition is still on.

First, check fuse #27. Make certain that it is making good contact in the fuse holder.

BTW, there should be a tool to remove/replace fuses on the top of the central power panel - usually bright yellow plastic, but can be other colors.

The headlamp relay is the large combo relay in positions XXIII/XXIV. You probably wouldn't want to buy one unless you are sure that you need it, since they are $75 each from us.

Nicole, yes i did everything possible to retract them on the car.

Wally wouldn't fuse 27 operate both the headlights and the retraction? The headlights come on perfectly normal, but there is no retraction even with the ignition on and switch off.

I am at work right now but I have gotten an estimate for a used headlight motor just in case ($125). I am hoping the relay isn't bad but I will check the fuse when i come home.

ok I checked fuse 27 and the relay. everything checks out!!! BUT! the motor of the headlights won't pivot downwards but only comes up! I guess a gear inside the thing died since it can only popup. so I manually put them down. Anyone know where i can get a headlight motor used for less than 125 dollars? no one around here is cheap
