Post GTS Mirrors

I am planning on adding the GTS mirrors to my '89 and am curious as to how difficult they are to install. I am planning on having a body shop paint them. Are their any tricks to installing or is it straightforward. Thanks.

I plan on doing the same switch for my 82.

From what I understand, it is an easy swap. You will just have to change out the wire connections. Otherwise, there are no other modifications.

I don't know if you know how to remove the original mirrors, but it is not that difficult. Rather than write up a procedure, I am sure Greg Nicols' site has the proceedure. You should be able to get the originals off in about 5 minutes or less.

Where are you in ATLANTA?
There was a small 928 gathering last week in North Atlanta, they are planning some more in the future.
Is this Ben?

Thanks for the help. Yes, its me Tony. I am still hanging on to the car. Kind of like my job! 250 numbers to go. I keep missing the gatherings in the Atlanta area. Thats what happens when you have no seniority, you work weekends.

I figured an easy way to tighten the mounts to the "ear" (mirror)...at least it worked on the original ones.

With all the guts out of the ear(the screw/spring inserted) and a 3/8's ratchet with only a 3" extension, put the square end on the extension on the screw head (the head is a weird inset). While holding the base mount in one hand, push down on the rachet with the other hand and turn until the threads grab. You'll have to apply some pressure of course, but it isn't THAT tough.

Hopefully it will work for the Aero mirrors too.

I have successfully fitted GTS mirrors to my 84' but there is something strange about them as I can't align the mirrors to get the correct view.

The right hand mirror won't move out far enough and I see mostly bodywork and the left hand mirror won't move in far enough to see any bodywork.

I imported them from the USA and I initially thought they may be for a LHD vehicle and my 928 is a RHD but only the drivers mirror (i.e. the right one) has the US style warning text on it so they must be for a RHD right? - there is no warning text on the other mirror.

And they didn't ask me when I bought them if my 928 was RHD or LHD?

If anyone else has had this problem can they let me know what they did to fix it.

Thanks.

Ben

The LH drive mirrors are different than the RH drive set. PM me if you want to sell them cheaply.

They are for a LHD car thats why the warning text is on the passenger mirror (right) only............the glass is different for each mirror.

I have an 89 and it took a few hours to install.

You'll need some sort of tool to compress the spring to allow the sections to come apart on the flags and also to push the lock in high enough to put the sections together.

I used a screw eye, a long bolt and some washers.

There are some excellent writeups on what you need. I found the one I used on the 951 pages.

Did you buy a complete kit that includes the electrical connectors? The GTS connectors are smaller so you'll have to crimp on the new ends. It was also very fiddly to insert the wires into the right holes on the connectors.

The biggest PITA was the gaskets for the base mountings. They kept moving. I think I used some saliva to "glue" them on.

All in all it was well worth the effort. These are the mirrors the car was designed for. The rectangular flags just don't seem right now.

Makes me want a drink just remembering them.
The whole thing, from putting the base to the mirror, to the gaskets and the wiring was just a pain, plus I had the memory function that at some point the wires on the body side harness under the seat had been put in the wrong spots.

Major pain in the ***.

OK - So it looks like I have fitted LHD mirrors to a RHD Drive car. DISAPPOINTED.

I hope I will just have to swap the mirror part and not the whole thing.
