Default Spare Tire Part Number Question

I have a spare tire that came with my 86.5. It has a 951.361.131.00 part number stamped in it. Never had to use it.

Will this spare work for our cars? Did the PO get the wrong spare back from his mechanic?

Bump.

It is a 5 and 1/2 inch wheel with an offset of ET 30.

Will this work on 78 thru 86?

IIRC it will work up to 86, but not from 86.5 up because of the larger S4 brakes on the 86.5 and later cars.

Speaking of spare wheels; I've been questioning the wiseness in my own case of using a 16 years (at least) old tyre, in case of a puncture. What would you guys recommend ?

Use it if ever needed (providing the compressor works) ?

Ditch it and use the space for something else ? (currently have a 'jump starter' there instead)

Get a new replacement (if possible) ?

That sort of stuff you spray into a tyre which will seal smaller holes; isn't there something about it ruining the tyre, so you have to replace it ?

Cheers,
Erling

I'm not sure you can even buy a new tire to go on the original spare wheel. Temptation would be to just find a skinny/short limp-to-a-tire-store standard tire, but there's really no room to go with anything other than the compressible kind that's on there now if you plan on it fitting in the spare tire well.

A year or so ago there was a local lister who had a casual flat tire experience on a local freeway. Fortunately it was on a Saturday morning so there was a lot of the day available to get towed off the freeway, find a tire store that had a suitable replacement in his size, get towed there, get the tires installed, etc. No spare riding along. Hmmm. At least with a spare, reasonably close to home, I could avoid the wait, the towing, the frantic searching for the right tires, paying list price plus, etc.

I have a set of spare wheels that gets loaned out once in blue moon for folks who have these problems locally. I'm in the Road Help List, in the Los Angeles area.
