Spoiler Question!

Spoiler Question!
I own a 1979 Porsche 928 and want to install a spoiler. I wanted the GTS spoiler but don't want to install it if it looks stupid. Has anyone ever installed a GTS spoiler on a older 928 and how does it look, and will install easily. If it meant for the older 928's than I will install an S spoiler.
Thanks,

Hi Shawn,
I personally think an Early 928 with the S4 wing and the S front spoiler looks great ! This is of course my opinion and you should look at the various configurations and decide what you like best.
Check out the 3rd photo on the page link below, the white 79 with the S front spoiler and S4 rear wing. I think it's killer !!

Hey Shawn, I too have a 79. My 79 already had the S4 wing on it when I purchased it. The wing looks like it was easy to install, and it also looks like it belongs on the car. Non-928 folks ask me all the time what year my car is. They just cant believe its a 79, they always guess mid 90's. As far as the front spoiler, mine currently doesnt have one. I am looking into getting one cause they do look killer. I just need to let go of the cash. I think they run in the $300 buck range. Maybe someone out there knows where to get one for cheaper. If so please let us know.

My 79 has the "S" spoiler front and rear. I think the S4 wing is the way to go. They look great both black and painted to match. I have seen a couple of cars with both the "S" rear spoiler and the S4 wing. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Go for it.

I have also had the "looks like a 90's car" compliment but I hesitate to add any spoilers or wings only because every time I am stuck behind a Pontiac Grand Prix in traffic I am so proud my car does not have all those plastic add on body panels.
The original Porsche designers did such a nice job with the body, I do not want to mess with what attracted me to this car in the first place which was simple and elegant lines.

Barry: You rock! It is nice to hear from someone who appreciates the original 928 design. In terms of the "look", I still like it best (with phone dials, no side moldings - just pure and simple).
However, there are serious aerodynamic advantages to having the spoilers. The "S" spoilers reduced the drad coefficient by about 10%, and provided improved front brake cooling.
The base 928 was well optimizwd for keeping the side windows clean, etc. But if you wanted some decent drag coefficient, you'd have to drive the car backwards - and then you'd deal with a lot of lift.
The aerodynamics of the S4 are further improved, thanks to the underbody covers and the rear wing. It keeps amazing me what you can do with this car in windy environments (e.g. bridges over the SF Bay) If you feel the wind, just going faster will take you back to the "like on rails" feeling, that I have never experienced to that extend in any other car.
Having said that, there are good reasons why people want to upgrade their older cars. However, one should never install the rear wing without a front spoiler. Why? Because getting downforce only in the rear changes the weight distribution at speed towards the rear. Without having downforce added at the front, you would decrease stability, and possibly increase understeer - not what you want in a such car, right? It could even be dangerous...
Somewhere - possibly in the factory repair manuals - I read a statement from Porsche that you should mount the rear spoiler only in combination with the front spoiler. That should preserve balanced aerodynamics. (Never underestimate the power of wind...)
Since it is much less expensive and especially much less complicated to add the rear wing, that's the way many owners go. If you prefer the factory look, and want the S rear spoiler, you have to change rear quarter glass, rubber, trim, etc.
So, I would say the S front and S4 rear spoiler combo is the more cost efficient and practical onw, while the S-all-around solution is more subtle.
Randy: The first and last paragraphs are just IMHO!
