Default Cat Fire - narrowly averted!

So, the saga continues...Thanks to PorKen, my '82 Weissach started for the first time in over 2 years a couple of nights ago. I put everything back together on it last night and fired it up to let it idle and make sure no leaks, electrical worked, etc...My 8 year old daughter comes out and tells me flames are shooting out of the exhaust! (me being in the drivers seat, I don't see it) - it was running rough, and smelly, but I'm chalking it up to getting warmed up and burning off all of the accumulated oil from all of the work over the last 2 years.
I shut it down and look underneath...cats are glowing bright red!

I've been researching the archives, but most of the troubleshooting advice has been for S4s and later. I've got an '82 without dual ignition coils/distributors/etc...Any ideas on what could cause this on my, now short-lived, running Weissach?!?

Thanks in advance for any assistance out there!

Sorry, not much help for an answer here, but those fires get expensive -- and fast! BTDT.

Good save.

wrong plug on the cold start injector.might have gotten warm up regulator or air slide plug on cold start injector which will make stay open and blow fuel into engine

a plugged cat can do the same thing,

get the cats, and check the AFR, and make sure that all cyl are firing.
