Lets try to keep as much info here in one place so its easy for future generations to find.
I am looking at different engine managemant systems for my OB's. The reason I am doing this is because I plan on forced induction for these cars. Recently I have been messing with the Split Second translation box. It is usefull but sometimes frustrating. For the price (<$350), it's great. I just wish it had more features.
I found this one made by FAST. It has tons of features built into it but it costs around $2,700. Things like knock detection, sequential firing, data logging, and the ability to run it w/ a wideband at all times and just set an AFR and the computer will keep everything running at your desired AFR. It sounds like it has everything you could want. Has anyone ever used one of these systems?
Holley and Accel make stand alone EFI systems but I'm not sure how user friendly they are. Does anyone have any experience with these?
What about Megasquirt or MoTec? Please share your experience.

Mark Robinson was talking to me about a computer they have. You would need to make your own custon wiring harness from their universal harness, but they seem like a very nie option. I was considering it with a turbo kit for tuning as the whole setup would run about the same cost as a sharktuner. It also gets rid of the inefficent batch fire fuel injectionl

I have a complete EuroS LH system on the shelf I will probably never use. The stock knock sensing system is hard to beat for the boosted cars.
Ryan, batch fire really isnt as inefficent as you would like to believe.
Sequential efi can smooth the idle a tiny bit, and you can use it to trim individual cylinders for EGT targeting.
VEMS has sequential, COP, EGT targeting, and a couple other nice features.
I am running MS II V3.0 on an 86.5 engine and I have EDIS-8 on it.
I am planning on running boost in the near future, and I personally dont like the MAF, stock intake, expensive caps and rotors, etc. Plus I love to tinker, lol.
So converting to that made alot of sence, since converting the idle is smoother, I get far better fuel economy as I can run at roughly 18.5:1 afr without any issues on the freeway, and I have less maintenance parts to replace as well.

For starters, simplicity. The auto tune function actually works. Todd ran his car for quite a while with just the auto tune perameters on the car. Even on the dyno there really wasn't much to tweak. It was simply amazing.
Friend of ours is a certified AEM programmer, had his own dyno. Even he was impressed with how simple Autronic was to setup & tune.
I'm not 100% sure what the retail cost of Autronic is. IIRC the prices are fixed by Autronic.

I always loved motec, but i really hate the seperate ignition box you need to run that doubles the cost of the system. That was the big turn off for me.

Changing from stock to any aftermarket ECU is for certified hard-core tinker-ers only, and certainly not for the casual wrench. Installing the hardware is the easy part, it's tuning it afterwards that takes all the time.
Best case scenario is to buy something from someone else who's already done the work for you, providing the engine configuration is exactly the same.

Compared to a system what was up and running this well that fast is simply amazing. Add to that Todd is as much of a computer novice as you can get, has never seen this system before & went in blind. Even the AEM guru up here was amazed with it's simplicity.
"Perfect" for Todd is above and beyond what most people will ever reach with their car.

Also as you mentioned about the variocam, one of the biggest reasons you probably got the motec was to run that system. Now that you can ditch the flappy and run the variocam off that signal your good to go.
I should mention that the conversion to MS on my car with EDIS-8 cost less than $1000 USD.
I am curious as to why Sterling thinks the factory computer is better for emissions as with the standalone computers you can putt timing and run it slightly leaner to reduce emissions.
