Default My dream 928 has a creaking headliner

Hi Folks,
Finally got my dream car, have been wanting a 928 ever since I could walk! Found a really clean '84 928S, very excited to show to my wife and daughter this weekend who are arriving from their summer trip (had to stay behind and work).
Hoping for some advice from you folks that may have had a similar problem. The headliner is very creaky at the front (where the headliner seems to meet the windshield and the side posts)...a normal smooth road sets the headliner creaking up a racket.
Thinking the creaking was between the glass/roof and headliner, I removed the 2 visors and mounts which allowed me to squeeze some waxpaper strips between the headliner and windshield. Didnt work.
I also tried putting vaseline between the headliner and the sunroof frame. Didnt work either.
Its difficult to assess exactly where the creaking is coming from, but it seems to be where the headliner meets the side posts at the front.
Please advice, as I'd like my wife and daughter to be impressed instead of irritated!
Many thanks

Welcome to the Shark tank!!! Get some pics posted, show off your new Shark.

The problem is a new one to me. Anytime my 928 starts to make a new sound I make the exhaust louder.

Were are you located? Maybe a fellow local sharkster could check it out.

Jeez, how many times can I say shark in one post....shark shark shark shark......we're gonna need a bigger boat.

+1 on the exhaust volume.
Let's see some pictures of this beauty!

Wow - I like the color, what is that?

Consider these comments friendly bumps to keep your question up top until someone has something helpful to post about it.

Default Need to find name of color

Love the color too...I read the name of the color somewhere before, but it was too complicated for me to remember, will need to find that reference again. But the color seems original all around.
By the way, is there a way for me to post pictures without a membership?
Cheers to Hacker-Pschorr for keeping this question up.

I don't think so. That might "kick in" after you have more posts. It's been a while since I've had 3 posts

In my car, there was a noise from where the sunroof liner meets the frame in the headliner. Extremely annoying.

So I opened the sunroof, and used a long screwdriver to individually losen each of the three screws that hold the liner on, push the liner up a bit, and tighten the respective screw.

This created a minor gap between sunroof liner and the frame of the headliner, and pretty much eliminated the noise.

You can pull the a-pillar trim. One or two screws then pull toward the centerline of the car to disengage the clips. If the sound goes away you have your culprit. Solving it will require your creativity but at least you'll know what you're dealing with.
Good luck,

Nicole has a good suggestion. The sun roof linner can make a bunch of noise. There are three screws just under the lip in the front that hold the sunroof liner in place. Loosening these screws as Nicole suggests allows for the sunroof liner to be adjusted. However, these are very short screws and are easily lost. Most of the time when I get a 928 at least one of these screws has gone missing.

There are some other places to look. The A pillars fit into the headliner, but mostly they squeak from the bottom where they contact the dash.

The headliner is made from fiber board and over time both the board and if the headliner is leather will shrink. This causes the front edge of the headliner to drop down from the windshield.

The headliner itself is held in place with plastic clips. These go into holes in the roof. If at some time the headliner was removed or due to shrinkage one of these plastic clips came out of the holes in the body it could be up there scratching around.

There are also wires for the dome light. These can rattle inside the roof frame. Sometimes people add extra wires up there for radar dectors and other add ons.

The rear cover for the sunroof motor can rattle around. Easy to remove and eliminate.

If you cannot find the source the headliner is easy to remove. The only glitch is having to take the sunroof tracks loose to get the sunroof trim off. After that it is a piece of cake to drop the liner. If you finally locate the problem the front of the headliner can be held up by adding some upholstery screws or by putting some silicon under the front lip and holding the headliner in place until the silicon dries.

Good luck

Creaking is quite common in many older cars with leather trim. Less so with vinyl. The points where the headliner meets the windshield, and especiallly the tops of the A-pillars seem to be the 'usual suspects' in the 928. As the chassis flexes with motion it produces friction between the trim pieces where they overlap or are in contact. It can be eliminated by locating the points of origin of the noises and gluing on small pieces of felt to separate the contact areas. This is the way the factory did it originally but over the years it's likely some of the felt has disintegrated or been displaced. If you have lots of creaky points it might indicate that the felt has been lost because a PO disturbed parts of your interior. Perhaps for body repairs?

Fixing the creaks is a process of attrition and can be a bit laborious but it's well worth it when you finally have a quiet car.

Luck

Default Thanks for the great advice, Colin

Im glad this is the only problem Ive got so far! The felt is a great idea. I had originally thought of using petroleum jelly, or spraying silicon in the cracks, but thinking it through now, I really need to separate the touching parts. Thanks again.

Fixing it with felt worked, but I suggest to others get a color felt that matches your interior. Also sprayed with dry lubricant which I think helped the hard-to-reach areas, although the overspray/drip marks the leather interior - be careful and wipe off immediately.

Nice car, host your pics on a site like www.imageshack.us and then link them in your post.

The color almost looks like Platinum Metallic, which is my favorite color on a shark
