I'm guessing if a low enough brightness LED cannot be sourced for door and footwell lighting, a gentle smear of ink from a sharpie will cut down the light output.
Plus you can tailor the direction of intensity of the light depending on which part of the LED gets painted.

The LED that I got from Radio Shack that are Red and 110mcd in brightness are perfect for the footwell. They are just like the amount of light that my VW and Acura throw off with their footwell lighting. The being pre-wired for 12v is a bonus too. I didn't have to drill a hole in the driver side because the bracket where by my diagnostic plug is ziptied to (middle of the console) already had a perfect sized hole in it.
I put a hole in the passenger side to the left of the CE panel in the fiberboard that the center console carpet is attached to. Right next to the screw holding that panel (by the left side of the glovebox. Perfect. Only lights what is in the footwell, not the footwell itself. Probably the nature of the long wavelength of the red light.
