I'm very interested in an 88 S4 Auto with 68k on the clock. Silver with black interior. Options include heated seats and mirrors, LSD, lumbar, seat memory, high output AC. extended steering wheel hub. amp, cd stereo. Listed new for over $75K. Owner has changed the timing belt and tensioner, serviced AC, replaced front calipers, rotors, pads, tires, last 3 years, Garage kept, cover, pictures nice.
Car has been off the road for a year. Gets started daily, driven around the block 6 miles weekly, out for gas 5 gal. every two weeks. A PPI (Danny's Big Bear)done in October, compressioon low in three cylinders until engine reved up, all 8 then checked in the 170's psi, brakes good no obvious oil leaks.
Sounds nice, owner is a car guy, nice. Paint and interior sounds very nice. I will look at the car on my trip back from CA to Florida next week. If it is nice I will drive it back to MD. Sounds too good to pass up. Asking $14500, is that high. I asked about getting another PPI but owner does not want to tag the car and put on insurance. Are many cars this well optioned? Should I wait until the 28th at Hershey or go for it?
Thanks,
Glenn

Sounds fishy....driven around block? WON'T let you have a PPI!?!?!? Danny's Big Bear.....Is that a Porsche shop?
As far as options - all listed is pretty 'standard.

Need to run a carfax on the VIN. Why isn't he driving it? What's with the "variable compression? Started daily? I can't imagine anything harder on an engine than to "start it daily".
No PPI by a Porsche shop = NO SALE.
There are lots of nice sharks out there and SOME OF THEM ARE SELLING 928s!!
Be patient.

Well…that seems a fair price based on the miles but it all depends on the car’s condition.
“Excellence” December 02 issue is reporting a range of low (poor condition) of…$11,087 to a high (excellent condition) of $16,875…keep in mind this is only a guide to go from so you may be in the ball park.
I wouldn’t give a rats butt if it’s had a zillion PPI’s done in the past because the only one that matters is the one YOU NEED to have done while you are there and asking questions…I made that mistake by not being present and paid thousands for the mistake. You need to be there in person with a short list of questions to ask the person performing the PPI. A person THAT KNOWS 928’s and what to look for not just some nut job at a Porsche dealership or otherwise.
If he doesn’t want to tag it for the drive there then offer to pay the money required to have it flat bedded to a shop of your choice. Probably couple hundred bucks at the most for the flat bed.
As far as starting it up every day and driving it around the block that isn’t necessarly the best thing for it…the car needs to come up to temp to burn condensation out of the oil and other important areas so that’s not always the best thing to do. It’s a real catch 22 in my book but others may have a different view.
Be warned…no PPI no whining as that’s simply mandatory on the buyers part…no seller excuse is good enough to forgo a PPI…period!
Also…Rennlist classifieds have several nice units up for sale.
However…good luck…hope it all works out.

No PPI=No buy.
Don't look for a DEAL! Look for service history and condition. We can all speak from experience you dont buy a 928 on a budget--you budget for a 928!
The 2 or 3k you save is NOTHING compared to the several thousand in upkeep a year. Find someone who is driving the car and that will expose its mechanical flaws.
You can always look at mine!
