Default All new Audio for 1989 GT

My GT has all-crap components - an Alpine headunit with radio and tape deck (really, a tape deck?!?), original speakers in doors, something aftermarket in the rear, Polk speakers over the rear wheels - and only about half of them work due to wiring problems or disintegrated surrounds. But all of that will change on Friday!

New stuff:
Alpine iDA-X001 headunit (radio and fully-integrated iPod/USB control)
Kicker ZX series 50Wx4 amp for the front end and 100Wx2 (bridged) for an 8" Focal sub I already have
Kicker KS series 5.25 separates in the doors and 6.5 separates in back

No, it's not an audiophile's system, and no, it's not going to win any boom-boom competitions, but it should sound pretty decent during road trips. I could probably get speakers from a better brand for about the same money, but I listened to some challenging recordings on the Kickers (running off only headunit power) and was mightily impressed. Great accuracy and detail. Not so bad for the price.

Chaadster is making up one last spare tire cover for me, which will free up the spare wheel well for the amps.

I can't wait!!!

Keep us posted on the Alpine unit. Some of the first generation iPod controlling units were dogs going through the menu's.

This winter that is my project, send some of the interior parts to get new leather & installed new speakers.

The iDA-X001 mimics the iPod's control mechanism and screen & menu layouts. I looked at other units, but they all showed only one ****-poor line of text/info, which is just out of the question. This way, any passenger can plug their iPod in and begin DJ-ing right away.

What I'm not clear on is if a plain USB hard drive with music loaded onto it can be connected to the unit. That would be nice - all the music I own or will own in the car at all times.

Anyway, I will post back with the results of the install and my impressions. I just wish I could find a couple of BBE sonic maximizers to throw in there too.

GAZ,

The wheel cover will be ready on Thursday morning, so you should have it Saturday. Hopefully it is the finishing touch to your system. Post some pics (esp. of the head unit) once everything is in place. I want an iPod controller, and that Alpine looks pretty cool. I like the old digital clock style time display!

Thanks again Chaad!!!

Yeah, I noticed the flip-clock look in the ad (I assume there are several to choose from) and was brought all the way back to 1980! I can't wait, but I might have to install that RMB I have lying around so I can still hear the GT over the music. :-)

Huh... an unexpected wrinkle. I just got a call from the installer and he said the 6.5" would not fit in the back without cutting the panel (I said n-f-w to that). He said there were 5.25's in the back and someone had put 6.5" grills over them (which fit rather poorly, btw). So he's going to do 5.25's front and back. If I want to bigger one day, I'd sooner cut holes in the doors for 6.5's than put them in back.
