Talking Piping on a 85' Euro~~HELP!!!!!

Well the time has come that id like my car to growl. Right now my 1985 5spd Euro as a nice little purrrr to her. But ive decided I would like it to be more like a thunderous ROARRRR. I decided to purchase just a new muffler online somewhere. Does anyone know what size inlet in and out i would need? I decided against a full cat back because money is tight right now. But a muffler and a nice weld on job should do the trick for the time being. Anyone have the specs on the 85 Euro size I would need? Also anyone have any recomendations on a new set of exhaust tips to slap on the muffler I buy? I was thinking either a supertrapp or a flowmaster 40 series...Thanks for all the help---Im a newbie be kind

Mike,
Use the archive search feature, top of page.
For stuff I KNOW about thru real testing. " it's the pipes laddy"
My final conglomeration is;
1. 2 1/2" pipe from the header 'Y'.
2. High Flow Cat - new at $56.00, available at any MUFFLER shop.
3. A Thrush -similar to a (sic) cherry bomb- cylinder type resonator/muffler.
If you remove the stock muffler/s and just weld up a Dyna or Flowmaster I'll probably hear your sHARk down here in Texas...NASCAR LOUD!
Neat until the new wears off -about 15 minutes-.
Anyhow, the Thrush medium flow took the Ugly out of the sound equation. I'm still loud but they don't hear me in the next county now. You will still have a great rumble, and a impressive back off sound coming down thru the gears but you won't need earplugs.
4. A shorty -15"- Flowmaster fits without hanging down.
5. A flat -Corvette looking- tip. This was all they had at the time .

If you go with a 3" pipe you can almost bet on resonation/rattle/buzz problems. Serious sympathetic vibrations.
Windows rattle, seatbelt slider in the Quarter panel covers go wild - very noisy- and the Qurter panel itself will resonate on more than one frequency and at different rpm.
The wheel well splash shield is held in with 3 screws and will vibrate/resonate at a varirty of frequency's. Things on your console will also rattle and buzz.
Soooo...
Stay under the 3" pipe size. We tried all sorts of hanger isolator cures and nothing stopped the buzz/rattle.
Point of fact even the 2 1/2" rattled until I had the Thrush installed which -I believe- stiffened the whole system up.
Additionally, at 3" the exhaust became visible under the car and starts to look like some after market crap welded on a old Camaro...
Remember!!!
1.No welding on the car even with the Battery disconnected. Tell them they can just cut a check for a grand or so if they smoke your computer/EZK.
2.They can drop the whole system from the header 'Y' flange on back in just a few minutes.
Trust me, these engines are LOUD in the unrestricted mode ... so go easy ....
Make a few stops and price the project. There are big cost differences from shop to shop.
Have fun,
Oh yeah, some minor popping will occur if you back off the gas too fast when de-accelerating.
Expect a small power loss in low end and small gain at top of mid range thru flat out range.
Have fun
John S.

Popping in the exhaust on decelleration is a symptom of air in the exhaust, usually from a slight leak near the front.

Thanks very much for that large "peices" of information. But some questions still exist in my head. I dont want to spend a whopping $600-700 on a full cat-back exhaust. About $100-150 for a new muffler and then another $100 for install?? Does this sound about right? Now when you say from the Y back? Im lost...I thought they just cut off the old muffler at the rear and weld on the new one I purchased? Im not sure if Im making sense to you, but im misisng the schematics of the whole 2 1/2 to 3" debate. If the piping on the old is 2 1/2 then shant I just purchase that? Or are you recomending that I have them do some piping work also? How much should that or all of this be varying in price? Thanks very much. Also I checked the archives prior to post but not all of it made sense, it seems I feel I am at a lower knowledge level

I bought the Afterburner from 928 Specialists and a pair of high flow Cat's. It Sounds tough! Everything fits in factory locations, so there is NO Camaro looking mufflers under the car. Oh yeah it's a 3" pipe and 2.5" Cat's so you might need the help of your local muffler shop to convert.

Mike ,
My bad....I think... .
Are the Euro's dual exhaust?
Reason I asked is though I have read post's to that effect ... there is a 80' MY Euro. with a single pipe set up like my 82' Weissach auto just down the road from me. I'll plead blissful ignorance on the subject of THAT Euro's exhaust system originality.
The 'Y' in question is where - this is a single pipe set up - the left and right header pipe meet just forward of the Cat. The Euro's might be different but my headers are in the sub 2" range, I'm thinking 1 3/4" or less.
My final configuration;
I had the shop drop the entire system from the left and right header flanges all the way back, so as not to do any welding on the car.
I wanted a 2 1/2" system - if you system is already 2 1/2", leave it there.
They should have the High Flow Cat., tube resonator, muffler, and tips of your dreams on hand.
My entire system, labor included cost a little under $330.00, but business was slow at the time and they were hurting for business.
Shop around and for God's sake, haggle a bit!
Compare price, and the pieces they will be installing. Every shop I checked showed me a variety of resonators, mufflers, and high-flow cats.
It's really O.K. to be inquisitive, it's your money.
If you do have the single exhaust system - make sure you get the shorty high flow cat. or you won't have the room (length) to put in a thrush or cherry bomb resonator before the pipe hangs a left toward your rear muffler ( mine was a 15" Flowmaster, it fits without hanging down ) and tips. Also, if for some reason your Euro was modified to use a O2 sensor for emissions compliance in your state have them install it.
Even with my setup you won't need an alarm...
Trust me
Wally,
As usual, thanks...I'm looking!
