Default Tie Rod End Differences From Year To Year

I know the tie rod assemblies up to the 86.5 are different from those of later years, but are the ends the same?

I at last found some time to do the steering rack and have just decided to do the tie rods (duh). I may have a new set of tie rod ends in storage from an '80 and am wondering if I can just swap out the ends vs. ordering new ones.

Many Thanks.

Ken

Don't holdme to this, but I think you can use the older ones. There is a little difference in length - the older ones being shorter. But the difference can be adusted out with the threads on the outer tie rod to get the proper tow out.

The inner portion is the same.

There were 3 changes up to 87, all were supposed to be interchangeble
according to Technical Bulletin #8.
If you PM your address I'll copy the TB and mail it to you.
There were some "end" differences, and the early and transition models had the old style
stop and spacers.
The rack length on the 'Old' model and 'Transition' model was identical at 795 mm.
The new model, up to/including 1988 models had a 810 mm rack length.

Rack end diamerter sizes:
Early: Left - 26mm, Right - 25mm
Transition: Left - 26mm, Right - 23mm
New: Left - 23mm, Right - 23mm.
Keep in mind if you find a part number on the rack , the Early and Transition models had the
same PN 928-347-010-22 and the same factory rebuilt PN 928-347-010-BV.
The stops and spacers for the early and transition models were also the same.
Stop - PN 928-347-329-00
Spacer - PN 928-347-331-00
The 'New model has no spacer and has a significantly different stop PN 928-347-329-04
I still have to cross reference the Hydraulic lines (rack to and from steering box)
but they appear to be identical..
FWIW
The 86 /86.5 model change over has a good size variance with the transition VIN -last 4 digits)
running from 1200 to 1700 depending on who you talk to.
However according to my Porsche Parts and Technical Reference (with Bulletins) for water cooled models 924/944/928 from 1977 to 1988 the transition by tie rod PN is at 0999 and 1000 which would (I assume) indicate a suspension change. I checked the Master brake Cylinder PN and they also

There is a change to a heavier tie rod between VIN 92-GS- 860999 and
92-GS- 861000
FWIW
The 86 /86.5 model change over (urban legend) has a good size variance with the transition VIN -last 4 digits) running from 1200 to 1700 depending on who you talk to.
However, according to my handy-dandy, Porsche Parts and Technical Reference (with Bulletins) for water cooled models 924/944/928 from 1977 to 1988 the transition by tie rod PN is at 0999 and 1000 which would (I assume) indicate a suspension change. I checked the Master brake Cylinder PN and they also change at 0999/1000 vin and this transition VIN also applies to the Brake calipers. Definitive...maybe not, but this is hardcopy Porsche , Guru's?
Takin' flicks of the removal install? Hmmmmmm?
