Default 0W-40 Oil?

In my PCA monthly magazine, the Tech Editor says we should be using 0W-40 oil in all post 1973 Porsches.

Anybody use it? See any difference from other weights?

I have been using it for about a year and a half or more. No problems. No difference that I can see. I get 3 1/2 bar at hot idle and over 5 bar at anything above idle.

I wonder if this guy even realizes Porsche made something other than a 911 since 1973 (Boxster, Cayenne and Cayman excluded)

I did do a search. I was merely trying to find out if anyone here presently uses 0W-40 and whether they have experienced any better results than the typical weights.

Art, now that I re-read the article, that's all he mentions! But he does actually acknowledge that there was a V-8 prior to the Chili-Pepper...

Brain,

I have been using 0-40 Mobil 1 tri-syn. for over two years.
Porsche factory fills all motors (flat 6 turbos, V6, twin turbo V8's and V10's with it).

Thanks, Rich. Its time for an oil change and I'm trying to figure out if I should change up. This tech article says that 0W-40 flows best at start-up and helps prevent wear. I might try it and see how it works.

Brian,

the Mobil 1 0-40 Tri-synthetic is not easy to find in the stores.
I buy mine @ www.autobarn.com

Good Luck

I have been running the tri-synthetic 0w-40 for a few years now without any pressure or leak issues.

We filled Stan's '84 Euro and after a 4 hour drive he said it never ran better, and was completely happy with it (and that is saying a lot coming from Stan).

Bought 0-40 M1 about a year ago in Walmart (yeah I know ugh) and have had great results. Car idles betweeen 2.5 and 2.7 BAR on a hot day and I've noted easier turnover and faster pressure build at startup. The gauge snaps right up as soon as the car turns over even after it sat for 5 months.

For those that track your cars or have higher mileage it may make sense to use a 50W.
