o2 sensor removal
1984 928S 5 speed. I'm hummin' right along on my torque tube removal but had a problem removing the o2 sensor? I could find no access via the driver or passenger compartment, so when I dropped the exhaust components I attempted to get a wrench on the sensor - no luck so I cut the 3 wires to drop the exhaust for access and put a 7/8" wrench on the sensor and off it came. What is the suggested access to the sensor and is there any indication, other than mileage, about replacement frequency

Sensor wire routes through a hole in the firewall/floor in the electrics compartment. Under the front passenger footwell carpet there's a plywood(!) cover that hides the fuses and relays, along with the connector for the sensor.
Replacement choices include buying a generic 3-wire Bosch oxy sensor and doing some solder-and-heatshrink splicing under the car, or getting the exact-replacement with the connector installed, and threading the cable through the grommet and into that footwell area. Hmmm, you are already more than half way there since you cut the cable, so the choice is easy if you can do a little soldering.
Have fun with the TT replacement. I know that job is somewhere someday in my future, and I'm really looking forward to it. Everything is cool now though, maybe it will last forever... yeah, that's the ticket!

So, Dr. Bob, I guess what you're saying is that in either approach one has to drop the exhaust/muffler to get the sensor out or have some kind of very unusual wrench to get at it and do you know if there is any way to determine that it should be replaced other than mileage?
RE: the TT removal - it has gone relatively easy so far, all bolts have broken loose easily except for a few that required a 5 foot extension on the wrench to break it loose. I am, so far, leaving the clutch in place and hope to have enough room on the tranny to pull it aft with all attachments in place, so far so good.

My mechanic had a special deep socket with a slot along an edge made especially for the 02 sensor removal. Maybe he got it from Snap-on or Porsche?

Also, all I have heard about replacement of the sensor is every 60,000 miles.
