Default Difference between early and late 928 side markers

Since there are two different part numbers for 928 side marker lights, customers sometimes ask me, if my side marker conversion pieces fit both the early and late model cars. And while I know they do, I have long wondered what the difference really is between old and new. Ther was no obvious difference, especially nothing visible when the marker is installed. Even the numbers on the lens are the same!

Now I got my hands on an older front marker, and was able to compare. And I found the difference is in the housing. A minor difference, that you can see below.

The newer marker light (at the top) has a notch in the housing, on the downward facing side. Also the thickness of the material in this area has been increased.

I did not find any other differences.

Just thought I'd document this...

That must correspond with the funny 'drain' on the rubber cap. Early cars don't have the drain.

That's a drain? I thought it was a pull-tab to pull the boot off.

I guess you learn somehting new every day.
