Post Need buyer advice

Looking to purchase my first 928 but could use a little experienced adviced. Found a Hawaiian based 95 model original owner automatic GTS with 26000 miles - been on the island since new and garaged - has corrosion on the gas lid but clean otherwise - asking price $45K. Question; would the hawaiian salt water air be anymore of a concern then say Florida's? 2) 26K miles is not alot but it's island driven meaning alot of stop and go I would guess. Would this make for a problem later? T-belt has been changed and PSD needed repair. New tires...what do you think?

Well as everyone on the board will eventually tell you, you still need to get a thorough inspection of the car. Not just take the owners word for it. I am familiar with an S4 that came over from Hawaii and that car was no worse for it. The issues it had were from sitting for too long(under a tree), not from being on the Island.

Having said that, 26,000 miles is not a lot of miles. If anything a lot of rubber and seals are bound to be dried out and may start leaking once you start driving the car regularly. From reading all the posts on the board it seems everyone would agree, a driven 928 is a happy 928. Proper care being given of course.

All things being equal $45k is about right for a GTS but with the lack of mileage some things are bound to come due. Get the car inspected by someone you trust, and who knows 928's. Put it up on a lift. Then adjust the price accordingly for maintenance needed.

Thanks K for your advice. Can anyone recommend a place in Honolulu for a pre-purchase inspection? Sounds like the Porsche dealership lacks a qualified 928 mechanic based on present owners information. Also, they had the PSD repaired recently (after 4 months at the dealership trying to figure that out), is this a common problem?

Just curious, I’m I the only one to loose sleep with the anticipation of owning my first 928? (when and where I may find her)
Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim, I just purchased my first 928 three weeks ago. A '94 GTS 5spd. My opinion is far from expert. Your HI car sounds great. The car comes with a 10-year warranty against corrosion from Porsche. I don't know how difficult it would be to make a claim on that warranty, but that should give you some peace of mind. You can go to www.porsche.com for more warranty information. You may also want to contact someone to make sure what's posted there hasn't changed in 6 years. I can look up the exact verbiage from my owner’s manual and post it. Once you get the car home change all the rubber, hoses, external belts, exposed o-rings, etc. Also, factor in the trip home. From the factory new cars have the luxury of kozmoline (sp?) protecting everything from the sea air.

Where are you located?

Phil Tong has a good story about transportation on his web site www.928s4vr.com

Good Luck

Tim-
There is a 928 Rennlister in Hawaii- do not remember his name, but perhaps if you post w/ "Hawaii" in the subject you will flush him out. I recall seeing pictures of his shark & house recently.
Good luck, it sounds like a pretty decent price. What color?

Hey guy’s - thanks for the feedback. I’m located in Woodland Hill, California. I hear I might be able to have the car shipped in a closed container with the likes of Sea-Land. Has anyone else had similar experience shipping? The car is white ext. and tan int. Seats have had seat covers since purchased new. It may need breaks as the indicator light has come on (cost)? I was wondering the same about the corrosion warranty myself and also about purchasing an extended Porsche warranty. Can you do that if the existing warranty has ran out and or being the second owner?
Thanks again,
Tim

As far as loosing sleep over your FIRST 928..I bought mine on e-bay three weeks ago ...During the auction I would get up in the middle of the night to check the price...The night before the auction ended I didn't know what sleep was ...I won the auction on a Tuesday and picked it up the following Sunday...And spent most of that week on the web (DAY and NIGHT) looking for ANYTHING that had 928 in it...I still get up in the middle of the night to look at it...Sleep who needs sleep ????...I have a 928.........

Make sure that whoever transports the car has experience with cars, tie-downs, under the deck storage, etc. Even though the container is insured, overseas carriers have been known to toss containers while in rough seas.

Check out the LA times, there's a '94 GTS 5speed just listed yesterday, 40K miles, but probably a lot of freeway.

Good luck

Tks again for the feedback. I think a trip to Hawaii may be in my near future (o'h darn) as everything at this point indicates this to be the best deal. I've noticed more 94's then 95's for sale. I've been unable to pinpoint the exact production numbers for both years, does anybody know the total productions numbers for those years? I believe for the 95GTS, it's around 90? Again, tks for everyones help. Hope to be joining some clubs and rallys soon. Wish me luck.
Tim
