I can't believe this?
Hi all, playing around with the vacuum hose (the 6way splitter under the air cleaner) goes to tranny, etc.
Somehow pulled the hose off the intake manifold,
Is it true that the only way to get it back on would be to pull the manifold?!! Please don't tell it's so...
thanks,,

Well..assuming you have a S4... most likely you will need to pull the intake off. I have heard of only one person who was able to get the line back on. That said, are you sure it is the line to the flappy?...The flappy line goes to the front and hooks to a small black cannister right near the knock sensor connector. There is another line that runs from this black cannister back to the 4 way splitter at the brake booster....Perhaps you are lucky...and just pulled this one off....It usually runs from the back to the front under the fuel rail cover...
Keeping fingers crossed for you..
Good Luck

Hi all,
Yes, you are all right--I need to let you know what I'm driving.
By the way, thanks for your quick responses.
88 (9/87build)
S4, auto
PS saw some post where it looks like someone actually used some hemostats and mirrors? Is it really possible to get back in there?
thanks again.

You don't have to remove the manifold if it's the hose that goes from the 6 way diverter directly to the intake. You'll have to remove your MAF and the rubber elbow that connects it to the intake. Then, if you look into the back of the intake from the rear pasenger side of the engine compartment you'll see the brass end of the connector pointing back toward the diverter. Use a pair of bent needle nose pliers to reconnect the hose.

I also noticed that you're having a problem with vacuum to your auto trans. The 6 way connector has one front, one back, two right and two left connections. The front right is the one that goes to your trans.

Ernest,
Thanks--I was hoping there was someone who knew what I was looking at. Yeah, the AT was happening exactly when the hose came off. (surprise).
Taking off the MAF--that doesn't seem like too big a deal. Let you know how it turns out.

Sorry for the late update; but I got the hose connected after removing the MAF and elbow. The vac hose was impossible to find until I layed up over the engine and looked down and towards the front of the car.
Soon as it was hooked up; the tranny went smooth as silk as before.
Thanks for all the support and advice. Now if I can only get the idle speed down....

928sss,
I'm confused by your description. There are two vacuum hose connections on the top of the throttle body. Both should have about a 1" section of connector hose going to the actual vacuum line. The one you want is the line from the connector that goes back toward the passenger compartment. Could you have knocked off the other one that points forward?

Hi Brittany,
Your intake is different from mine, but your vacuum lines are similar.
If you remove your air filter holder (two 10mm nuts) you'll see the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) under it. loosen the clamp with a long straight screwdriver and you can wiggle the MAF out of its rubber elbow. Behind and below the MAF you'll see a six way vacuum connector. On mine the automatic transmission is the one on the right front.
Be very careful not to accidently disconnect any of the hoses that go to it. You can check the hose with a Mity Vac or you can buy a piece of hose at Pep Boys and connect it to the line and see whether it will hold suction from your mouth. If it doesn't it could be broken or disconnected.

Britttany,
The line comes up from the passenger side and goes under the middle of the intake area to the splitter. It's the only line which leaves the engine and goes under the firewall towards the back of the car.

That pic I posted above is old. I just realized how cheezy the tie-strap holding the vac line is.
Here's my current set-up with the relocated vac splitter where I can service and test the vac lines without going under the intake
