Alternator charge question

Got my new 165A alternator in. Finally able to run the stereo stuff, electric fan and headlights at idle! However I still have charging issues when I first start, until I break about 1500 rpms. Occasionally when idling at a light it will stop again until I rev the engine over 1500 for a moment.
I know the charging bulb and resister on the back of the instrument panel are suspect. I changed the charging bulb so it must be the resistor, or the actual circuit membrane. My membrane is on it's last legs, I really do not want to chance taking it out again until I get a replacement.
Q: I should be able to jumber a resister across the charging wire where it goes into the gauge panel and back out to the alternator, correct? That would take the charging bulb and original resistor out of the picture, I hope. WSM shows which color wires, so should be easy to do.
Does anyone know off hand what size risistor is required to get the alternator excited at idle?
Thanks!!

Nope. I think the issue was further down line. I had to run a new wire from a keyed power sourceat the fuse panel using a resister and a diode. Working fine now.
