Post is it safe to get a rebuilt brain?

Hey guys, I finally decided to sent out the brain of my 928 to be tested.
If the brain results to be bad, what do you guys advise me, to get a rebuilt? Partswerk in Chicago? has one for $400 ($150 core charge) and it comes with a 12 month warranty.
Does anyone here has a good spare brain that they want to sell?
My porsche is a 1984 automatic.

It might depend on what year car it is, but I think that the only brains available are rebuilt ones. There are no new brains available anymore, and even the ones from Porsche are rebuilt. Buying a used one might be cheaper, but you never know what you're getting, and it probably won't have any warranty. If it was an original used brain, it would be the same age as the one that went bad, if it is bad. It might last for years, or it might last a day. There's no way to know for sure.

Thumbs up

I just got my rebuilt LH controller from Part Werks. The 12 month warranty eased my decision to go with them. It took them about 2 weeks to rebuild mine because they didn't have any cores. So far everything is good.

Guess I will be sending mine in, too. Tested mine today in another car and both the one that runs my car AND the spare I always kept in the glove box were both bad. I bought the used spare a little over a year ago. Tested good when I got it. What could go wrong with it just sitting? Heat related? Could there be something about the car that damaged the brain and will damage any brain plugged into it? Grounds, voltages and signals check out OK on the connector. The injectors were firing with the key on but without the engine running. The engine would run, but only at ~1100rpm with the throttle kept at a certain position. Any more or less throttle and the engine would stall. I was able to limp home. What were your symptoms? <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Funny, I just had my LH fail and its on its way to Part Werks with a friends from his S4. Part Werks is the way to go, they are very customer oriented and went way out of their way to handle my out of warranty repair. You may have a partially functional fuel pump relay chip on your LH. Listen when its running if you can hear the fuel pump buzzing consistently. Also, just try jumpering the fuel pump relay. Run a female spade from slot 15 to 87 on the fpr slot of the fuse/relay board on the pass. footwell. Thats what mine did. My relay was good, but the chip in the brain was dead at the output so it never turned it on, thus no start for me! Hope this helps!

My car started running too rich to drive. I tested everything I could a could not find anything wrong. I sent my brain to Part Werks to have it tested and rebuilt if necessary. They sent it out to their rebuilder. My rebuilt brain did not make a difference. Something elso must be wrong. They told me that their rebuilder is reputable and that Porsche uses them so they would not have "fixed" it unless something was wrong with it. I would think that it is possible to have flaws with the brain that may have nothing to do with the problem. i will post once i determine the actual problem.

My car would surge badly when held at constant throttle in lower gears. At the time, I wasn't sure that the LH controller was to blame but realized that it was a possibility. The controller actually died while it was in the shop for unrelated service. Evidently, the car wouldn't start and the fuel pump wasn't getting power. The controller was swapped with a known good one and the car started fine. I was certain the controller was bad before sending it to Part Werks.

The car now runs well and the surging is gone.

My problem is I bought my 928 3 months ago. I got it at a good price bc it was not running.
Well, the fuel pump turned to be bad so I thought by putting a new fuel pump, vroommm. Not that easy though.
So far I been trying to start the car with no luck. I been bypassing the fuel pump relay but nothing. Last week I bypassed the LH brain and the car starts for 2-3 secs. To be on the safe side I decided to test the brain.
Some wires has been chewed in the relay box. Also, the former owner used to start the car with the battery charger on. All that, hmmm, he might have fried the LH brain.
