Hey Bernie,

That looks sharp, once you get that with those red vaccume lines that will definatly look good. Did you also do the Valve covers? Although, you can't really see them too much on our 85'& 86's. I am looking forward to seeing the completed package.

Hi Dave,
Yes, the covers were done as well. If you cruise around my linked site, you will get to see a lot of pictures of my refurbish to the intake. I found lots of little things to fix along the way so it was well worth the effort. There are also some before pics to see what the intake looked like before I started. I also have a bunch of smaller parts, including fender brace, that are coming in candyapple red powdercoat. Stay tuned for more updates.

Bernie, where did you get the red intake coupler tubes, and are those stock hose clamps?

Hey Bernie
I like the vac line idea but i have one question.
Isnt that stuff TOO soft for use in a vacuum system? Ive seen this stuff i think and the first thing that popped into my mind was what happens when one trys to suck a thick shake through a plastic straw . The straw collapses!

Will that be an issue do you know?
your covers look great! Im thinking of going black as well, but in a more sinister/industrial looking MATTE finish. Jury is still open on that though, i have WAY too many other things to decide first.

This is kinda on the same subject, but what paint is the best to work with and hold the temps when used on just the letters and numbers?

I just reviewed your website pics. Looks like fun. I think that's what I'll be up to this winter, here in the great white north. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Hi Tony,

No, this stuff won't collapse. Your straw thoughts are valid though. This stuff ain't that gooey. I have a friend who already had a bunch of blue lines on his that were the same tubing and he has had 0 problems. The biggest advantage, outside of the excellent sealing properties, is the way it takes all of the stress off of the vacuum splitter that lives under the MAF. Whenever I would move something around down there, I was always concerned about cracking either a line or the rubber splitter itself. That concern is completely gone now. I can lift up the splitter easily and it puts no stress on any of the vacuum lines. The one concern you need to be aware of is kinking the lines trying to make too tight of a bend. I did reuse a couple of the 90 degree elbows to make some of the tight turns. I just cut off a small 1" piece of the hard tubing and placed it in the elbow and then pushed the silicone tubing over it. Works great and the seal is perfect. Tried the milkshake suck (don't laugh)on those lines to be certain no air was seeping in.
The silicone boots are made by Turbonetics. You can access any of this stuff through better race shops. Do some web browsing and I'm confident you will find it. This is supercharger stuff capable of handling extremely high pressure. The clamps are not original, I hate those bloody wormclamps. They immediately chew up anything you put them over. These are T-bolt clamps. Again, they are a necessity when supercharging. They put uniform tension around the joint without gouging. The problem is that t-bolt clamps have a bandwidth that is too large for the original boots, so don't think you can change one without the other.
So far, I am really happy with the way the project is coming along. Once I get my candyapple red parts back from Applied Powdercoating, I will post those pics as well. I'm waiting for - fenderbrace, cambelt covers, fuel rails and various brackets.

I guess its apparent now why I am calling the shark REDALERT. I decided I wanted fancy but conservative. All components will either be black, red or silver. I still need to paint in Porsche on the intake runners which will be done in high heat silver.
I used a Testors paint pen to paint the raised letters. Not sure how it will stand up to the temps but its an easy fix if it needs touchup or redoing.

Thanx for all of the positive support.

What will be really cool is when I get to the chromed 1 piece airtubes. Working on that problem now.

85,86 owners should browse my pics before attempting this. There are a couple of worthy notes and I will keep that site updated as I progress.

Greg,
When I took the 89 apart for refurbish I found some corrosion on the valve covers and intake. I did a proper job of stripping the old paint and just rattlecanned the parts with Hi-temp black crinkle paint. Looks very nice. Very similar to the Ferrari manifolds. It has held up nicely after several track days and some DE days plus a hot summer tour in B.C. Cheers
