Post Not running, CIS

I have a '79 Euro shark that stopped running suddenly. i.e. stopped car, went into store, when I came out it wouldn't start. I think I tracked it down to a to lean fuel problem, because when I turned the idle mixture key clockwise, or pushed down on the plate slightly, it would start. It runs rough, with a lot of 'backfiring' when I give it any accelerator.

I checked out the pressure of the pump, and that checks out ~90 psi closed. After the WUR, and before the distributor I get about 70psi closed. At an injector out I get from 0-70 psi depending on the position of the plate.

The interesting/weird thing is that I get ~0psi at the WUR when I have the tester not blocking the gas flow.

The plate seems to be very stiff, but I don't have anything to compare it with. I also replaced the rubber o-ring in my WUR after all of this happened, the old o-ring was in pieces all over the place.

I also checked the oring on the fuel return line on the distributor and it seemed fine.

Hopefully I haven't left any info out. Does anyone out there have any idea what could be the problem? I will probably have it checked out by a mechanic as soon as I can, but I would like to know what the problem might be.

Thanks for any help.

Jim,

Your systems pressure (70psi) is about right. Appears your control pressure (0 psi) is the culprit. Check your control pressure regulator (WUR)to see if the heater has shorted (resistance test) and check to see if you are getting 12 volts to it. Also, when you changed the o ring on it did you move the adjuster plate?

Ok, I took the car in and the mechanic said that the WUR does not check out and I need to replace it. I am looking for a replacement, the WUR is in the shop with the car.

Does anyone have Bosch part #'s for a '79 euro? Will ones for a US work on a euro?

Thanks for the help

Jay Kempf, who frequents the RennList 928 eMail list, has had good results in rebuilding his WUR. Fiddley, but can be done.

Jim,

My 78 euro AT has a different WUR than my 78 US 5 speed. They look the same but the euro has a top vacuum attachment. I checked the parts manual and the 79 US 5 sp had a mid year part number change. I would call one of the big three so they can check their parts list. BTW you will probably need your VIN number if the change applies to the euro versions.

I bought the WUR, and put it in, but I don't think that was all of the problem.
The shop says that I need to clean the injectors (believable, since the car sat for quite a while before I bought it.)
I am going to pull them and send it to a bosch place to clean them -- I called them and they said they could do it for ~$70. Will let you know how it turns out.
I started to try the rebuild a while back but was unsure about some stuff and got busy doing non-car stuff. Thanks though Wally

Thanks for the help.
